Title: Thinking about getting a Tattoo on my arm
Post by: redman555 on October 09, 2010, 03:47:17 PM
Well as the subject says, I am considering getting a tattoo on my arm.  I was planning on getting something Italian (I am 100% full blooded Italian) but wasn't sure where to even start.  Does anyone know any good websites that have pictures of tattoo options?  Also I have never gotten a tattoo and was curious how bad it hurts lol?

Id talk to Ink if I was considering it.  Dude knows his stuff.

do your homework on them. The only spots around the arm that hurt are the inner side of your biceps cause the skin is more sensitive there. I have a total of 4 tats on my arm half sleeve on my left arm, and a memorial to my parents on my left forearm and same locations  on right arm , Iron Cross with 5 skull heads on my right shoulder blade and a wolf tat on my left leg.

Tips on getting Tats.

1 Do your homework on the artist just do not go to any shop without doing research. Ask friends if they know any good shops to goto

2 make sure it is something you want for the rest of your life since it will cost you more to get it removed.

Pain Scale in my eyes is, I consider it a controlled Rug burn feeling that is about all.

If ya were in the philly area I could recommend 2 people to you and all

Good Luck

I would send ink or Estes (Kjetil) a personal message, they're both artists.

First off i would talk to Ink as someone else stated, also if you have friends with tat's and you like the work talk to them on where they got there work done, pain factor really depends on the persons pain threshold, i always enjoyed a good snooze when i had all mine done, but that's me also the cleanliness of the shop is important to in your decision

EDIT  my next work is going to be a 50's pin-up

I have demon looking skull in between my shoulder blades (just below neckline when wearing shirt) which was cool when I was 18. Now, not so much. Soon as I am working and get money saved up, I am going to have tribal design to cover it. I was thinking of getting something on my shoulder eventually.

Great advice every one,  :aok

they pretty much nailed it....except a few things, if the shop is reputable they will use a high end ink, which cannot be removed by laser, it just burns it in your skin, the laser's do a good job of taking out carbon based inks... IE old crappy ink that fades...

PAIN  yes tattoo's do hurt, some, they hurt to the extreme, others not so much, the more sensitive the area the more pain...the larger the tattoo, the longer it's gonna take, the more pain it will involve.

"A tattoo is an outward expression of ones inner self"  stop looking at other peoples tattoos, look inside of yourself, and you will see what to get, then find the right artist to bring it to life.

you say you want it to be Italian, I designed a maple leaf with the Italian colors inside for someone who was half Canadian and half Italian (duh)   :D

what are you all about? Music? old paintings? wildlife? what makes YOU tick?  these are the questions I ask someone who comes to me for the first time,

family Crest? do you have kids? if so do there names in the Italian colors....?

make ABSOLUTELY sure they look at their needle tip with an eye-loop, sad to say this is not a very common thing, the artist says "the needle is new" ya but are the tips bent? I find many bent needles and every single person i tattoo that has been tattooed by someone else, they say I am the first they have seen, really look at there needles....this is very important the needle is what puts in the ink the thing better be perfect.

take your time in choosing the right idea, and even longer in choosing the artist, where do you live? I could check out the local shops and recommend one for ya.

good luck....oh one more thing...tattoos are more addictive then AH :cry

I have to agree they are more addicting then this game. I have 6 total and have 3 more in the works but its the cash thing right now thats the only problem. 1 is a reaper that I am playing around with and a few more biker related tats. I prefer Black work over Colored in just my opinion.

A question if you don't mind.

Solid black band about 1" tall all the way around a biceps (the black ring is the symbol of my immediate family)  rough idea of the cost / time?

Pain, as I understand it, would be pretty high on the inside of the arm.

In the end, what really matters is the skin that the tattoo is applied to, will one day decay to a black mass in the bottom of your casket.

Cheers!

first off...what dicho said. the impression i get from ink, is that you'll get nothing less than the truth from him, regardless of whether or not you want to hear it.

secondly, your dilemma is why i don't have a tattoo. to me, picking a picture, or a design out of a book, or somethgin off of the wall, or from a catalog, is not the right way to go about choosing a tattoo.
it should be something of your own design/choice/desire, with only you influencing your decision. and of course all of this with the full realization that whatever you get inked onto yourself will be there for the rest of your life.

i've yet to come up with anything that i want on my body for the rest of my life, hence i don't have any.

 good luck dood.

I remember when having a tattoo set one apart from the crowd.  Now a days its the opposite.  Everyone and their grandmother has tattoos.

Good luck with your tattoo :)

A friend of mine that owns a shop had some great advice.  Get the artist to draw it out on a piece of paper and hang it up somewhere that you will see it on a daily basis.  If you still like it after a few months then get it.  I carried a picture of a piece that I wanted to get in my wallet for about six months, and in the end decided not to get it.  Still gotta figure out what I want to go in that spot though!?   :D

One problem with the red is the forearms. A long sleeve shirt will cover those up. I even knew a guy with some nice sleeve tats on both arms that works in an office environment. You'd never know he had them unless he showed them to you because he did them right and cut them off just above his wrist. That way even if his dress shirt rides up a little you still cant see them.

To the OP maybe you should get this being you're Italian.  :aok

Keep in mind also that there are "try before you buy" types now. You can get it airbrushed on or even some places have temporary transfers available. Test that puppy out before hand. You may find that after wearing it around for a couple hours that it isn't as cool as you thought it would be. I have a few that I wish now I'd have said no to but it's too late now. On the other hand I also got a written guarantee with one...it was guaranteed to last for a minimum of 2 weeks after my demise lol! Choose well, choose wisely and good luck!

Well I have 2 tats

The first 1 I got in 1988 after I got stationed to Millington Tn. Its an eagle head with USMC below it.

My 2nd one is a full sized chimney with the numbers 343 in it. I'm not done with that one but when I get some time I will get it finished.

1" tall all the way around the arm would take me about an 45min...maybe an hour....although I have been inking for 23 years....so I do work fast, I would charge around $150-$175

as far as putting the names you can just place them above or below the band.

I don't know of any good "flash" site (flash is the "artwork" all over tattoo studio walls) I pretty much only do custom work, I talk to the client and draw a design from there input.

if you look for shops all in your area i would gladly check them out online and recommend one.

How about just a simple Italian flag with "Mia" on the top and "Italia" on the bottom of the flag? Then it would be easy to add your parents names when they pass and show they were, as you are, full-blooded Italian.

Just have a hot naked chick leaning against a palm tree and put your current gf or wife's name below the tatt.  I once worked with a guy that had like 6 of these on him.  He served in the Navy in the 50's.  Go figure.

Dallas Fort Worth but ya I looked at it a while back and just now which goes to my previous statement.  You're obviously an extremely talented artist and you're a fellow AH'r.  Subsequently your needle is the ONLY one that goes anywhere near me <S>

Ink can probably tell you this also Flash work is usually the Drunks and kids coming in saying I want that one, A Tat is something that is personal to you and it Holds meaning to ya. Sit down work a few ruff sketches. I can tell you all of mine are originals from my brain that my artist drew up for me, the only one that is from a flash wall was the memorial to my parents cause I could not come up with an original one for them it was the basic cross with a dove and a rose with their names in the cross. Like others have mentioned here do not rush cause you may regret it down the road.

Taking advantage of this thread being fresh for some help and input:

@Ink:  I figured it wouldn't be this easy, but you wouldn't by chance have an equaly-talented or reputable twin brother out here or familar with the west-coast?

@All:  I've been considering getting a tattoo of a compass on one of my upper arms, and with the Ex bailing ship two years ago, this desire I've had for this tattoo since I've been ~18 has been strongly rekindled in me.  The timing and my recent emerging financial situation seems to be right to finaly go for it, the problem before me now is I need to begin searching and interviewing my local artists and shops, as well as finding a design I like and strongly personaly agree with... living most my life in the greater metropolitan LA area it's not a problem of finding one (I can randomly throw a stone from where I stand and have a very good likelyhood of it landing in a shop or hitting an artist.), but deciding who's the best to actualy go with for the design and work.

Most of my friends that have tattoos don't have them done in a style or quality that I'm interested in, the ones that do often times refer a few artists but then other friends of mine will recommend other artists while unrecommending the other's recommendations... so this vision of the tatt I want, shrouded by the fog in my head, hasn't been coming to me any clearer, rather it seems to be receeding further into the mist... which is a problem because then it just comes back to me how badly I want this tattoo done, but disapointed at my lack of productive progress made twords it.

So, starting from scratch here again, I'm looking for a reputable artist/shop in my area amongst the many, one that does good, clean and solid line-work with some consistent curvatures and good semetrics, with a touch of good free-hand scripting for the N, S, E or O, & W (might just be one single N style compass too, but as I understand it, just one important step at a time here with this - though design suggestions/concepts are always welcomed).  I'm thinking four-star with at least 3-inches from the W-E tip and 4-inches from the N-S tip, also entertaining the idea of the S-fork being just noticabley longer and slimmer than the other three forks (with the N maybe also being a tad longer but just as bold as the E & W fork) so that the compass also slightly resembles a cross but is still clearly and most of all a compass.  Also, any rough professional guesstimates of what a good quality compass tattoo job will run me up for outa my time and money?  This is my first tattoo, but more importantly to me is that this will likely be THE only tattoo I'll ever get, so I'm wanting to get it good and right here.

You getting it done at home or coming to the US.

I never saw why anyone marks up their body.... but to each his own.

We were at a party on a boat once and our group was laughing and talking about tatoos. One of the guys had one he got back when he was young and had a long drunken night with friends. Some of the girls brought up the notorious tramp stamp that some girls like getting on their backs. Seems one of the girls on the bow that evening just happened to have one. She didn't seem to mind the terminology and tried showing it to everyone there.

I prefer my art on canvas or on wheels.

I get Tattooed for the fact that I have been an artist my intire life, and Tattooing is the only living artform there is, it is the most powerfull artform...at least for me
there is nothing quite like seeing a real Tattoo, I am not talking about the typical wall flash but a true piece of artwork.

when I started to do Tattoo's they were a very much  looked down upon, I was judged by so many people they saw my ink, and immediately assumed all kinds of bad stuff, over the years I have showed many of those people that Tattoo's are ART not trash.

now a days people have turned them into a fad, that is far from what they are  believe it or not I absolutely hate what they have become.

i think that even these days, tattoos are pretty much looked down upon.

they shouldn't be. i think that the so called "average" joe sees them as "different", and thus fears them.

as for tattoo parlors with the designs on the walls? i can fully understand why they have them, but could not myself imagine looking on the wall, and saying "i'll take that!! put that on my arm, 'cause i don't have an imagination"

No truer words have been spoken here, Ink hit it on the head, a great percentage are because it looks cool, or because he got one now i want one, mine are for personal reasons, now about those tramp stamps... very few i find appealing most are just that, a stamp.... lol i do have to admit the funniest one i've ever seen said "place beer here" in the usual tramp stamp location, i asked her why she did it she told me it was on a dare,   good place to rest a beer thou

"i think that the so called "average" joe sees them as "different", and thus fears them."

Fear? I think the average Joe sees them and says that's gonna look like toejam in just a
few years and wtf was she thinking? Never mind that the "spiked collar" tattoo around
her neck isn't going to do wonders for her  career  - unless it's to be spent behind the
counter at the local "7-11" for the rest of her life. :)

That's girls. Most guys I see with tattoos I see them as not having been able to hold their
liquor at some point in their past.  Saw it happen so many times while I was in the USN.
and with a few exceptions there were many regrets and why the diddly did you guys let me
do that?  On the other hand RARE is the person I've seen who is like what Ink describes.
