Title: Field Mods
Post by: ttflier on October 12, 2010, 09:29:00 AM
It seems to be fairly common knowledge that most planes, gv's and ships were open to be modified once they reached their theater of operation - military personnel can be very creative when it comes to finding ways to being more effective or surviving!!   I thought it might be nice if field mods were made available as a perked option for un-perked vehicles and planes, ie a B-17 20mm perk option, etc.  I am not an expert as to what was modified and how, but there certainly seems to be a lot of expertise on this board as to what might be made available.

Might make it a bit more interesting when you encounter a con or GV, not knowing what type of mod you might be facing.

Can't say that I'd like to see this game become like most every console game where you can apply "power-ups" to our planes.

It has long been HTC's policy to now allow field mods into planes, I suspect that won't change.  However, I don't think it's a terrible idea to consider some of the mods though, but it would have to be done in a case by case fashion.

Take HTC over where?  Or did you mean "take over HTC"?   :headscratch:
Is this a good time to point out bad grammar and hanging prepositions? Or was this supposed to be a serious thread...  :neener:

I want a field mod where i can put real spitfire wing on spit 16 and I'm willing to pay extra perks just to have bubble canopy:pray

I'm also willing to pay extra perks to get +25 boost on spit 16

c'mon guys, we gotta put some perkpoints to use besides using it as a gateway to forbidden planes

Personally, I don't know what kinda of mods could be added to aircraft that we don't already have.

Its not like they upgraded engines or improved the overall performance of the aircraft. Most field mods were expedient - adding guns here and there, etc. We already have a wide array of loadouts on most aircraft.

Now armor - that's a different story. Tankers were always welding stuff to their tanks. I can see Shermans using applique armor, many took plate from German tanks and welded them to their hulls. PTO Shermans welded frames for sandbags and even palm tree logs...Schurzen and bedspring armor would be cool, but they were intended to pre-detonate shaped charges and do nothing against AP rounds, so that's moot. Perhaps additional camouflage could be an option...

I dunno. There's a ton of other stuff that requires improvement or enhancement.

The problem is you'd open up a pandora's box that could never be closed.

Player A gets shot down by player B Player A goes HACKER! CHEATER!
B says but I just used XXXX field mod.

The whining is bad enough now, this would just make it 10x worse.

This sounds utterly brilliant.  Apart from the physics involved, this would add an entirely new dimension to the virtual world of AH.

Incorrect. The military lowered the P38L's max manifold pressure from factory delivery. Lockheed reps went out to the field to show ground crews to get maximum performance out of their P38Ls.

Or maybe pay a certain amount of perks to permanently unlock a specific field mod.

I don't see how performing a tweak, or removing a restrictor plate, is a field mod. You're comparing apples to oranges. You gonna 'perk your ride' by having a cartoon Lockheed rep come out and pimp your Lightning?
