1942 - During World War II, Attorney General Francis Biddle announced that Italian nationals in the United States would no longer be considered enemy aliens.

1915 - British nurse executed in WWI

1862 - Confederate cavalry leader General J.E.B. Stuart crossed the Potomac River after looting Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

1870 - Confederate General Robert Edward Lee died at his home in Lexington, Virginia.

   Bill Halsey and Pete Mitscher had planned long and carefully for October 12. On that day they both intended to disprove forever the military theory that sea-based air power must operate outside of the reach of land-based air, limiting itself to attacks on relatively isolated land targets and opposing surface forces.
