Last nights MOM was a hoot. I got a late start and had to take off a few bases ahead of the main group. While climbing Vilkas came on country channel asking for a gunners spot. I readily offered an invite. We made it to alt and joined the group before the target. Vilkas was responsible for smoking at least two aircraft from the scores attacking the formation. He didn't get the kills but definitely lit them up. we made it to the target and released bomb load. fuel leaks shortened our flight and we dove for the deck. I took a route over two ports hoping to avoid fighters and possibly nurse it home to conserve fuel. As we dove a 262 jumped us but vilkas kept us alive and ran him off only losing one drone. We were able to make it nearly home and had to ditch due to lack of fuel. Vilkas told me that he has been denied a gunners spot before due to his age. He was an anti-aircraft gunner for the Wehrmacht in WW2. Conscripted by the Germans. Please don't miss a chance to learn some history from Vilkas and guys like him. They are passing on daily in droves due to old age. He was a pleasure to have aboard and he is welcome with the 77th FS Gamblers anytime.
