Title: Terrain issues. Everyone please read.
Post by: daddog on October 13, 2010, 08:31:04 PM
Gents,

There is a 'slight' chance FSO might be postponed this Friday due some of our event terrains having to be updated. One of them is Italy that we are currently using in this months FSO. Skuzzy and the terrain team have been working over time to get it resolved.

-Best case scenario will be a new Italy terrain to download come Thursday/Friday.
-Worse case is we will postpone the Frame Friday the 15th.

My apologies for the short notice. It was unexpected, but quite necessary.

What about all the other bugs with this latest patch. Number of posts on the general forum about indestructible objects, guns not working on planes, etc.

Don't know if that is related or not Krusty.  :headscratch: Maybe Ghostdancer could answer that one.

Starts out okay, then as you scroll down looks more like a horror story. I haven't updated yet myself (no time to fly since yesterday) so I'm just reading what others say.

Nope the terrain issue is separate. Basically there were several old terrains that have still worked on the server from the player standpoint. However, they had code in them that  conflicted with the server code and architecture. In the case of the North Sea terrain it is 3 years old and has not been touched for that period because when chosen as the active terrain in the arena it does not show any obvious signs of issues to us. However, on the backend it impacts server performance and stability because of code that was used to create it three years ago which is no longer valid.

These were issues before the new patch and the terrains causing problems were removed before the new patc.

So the terrains that were removed were ones that were impacting server performance. They need to be rebuilt with the latest TE to resolve these issues. Some of them that is rather simply to do others much more time consuming.

The other issues you are talking about are not terrain issues. The terrains still in place are terrains that were either built with the new TE or caused no server issues.

Perhaps you have hit upon why we've seen so many mass-disco's over the last few months.
