Title: New chip:Need to do anything 'special'?
Post by: Ripsnort on June 28, 2000, 08:52:00 AM
I have a P2-300 chip, upgrading to a 400mhz chip, just pop it in and go? Do I need a new bios?  Thanks in advance!

Depends on a mobo - 400 is more likely to be 4x100 while 300 is usually 4.5x66. If it's a jumperless mobo - just go into setup and change, otherwise would need to muck about with jumpers (I presume the mobo is capable of running a 100MHz FSB).

BIOS should take 400 with no probs - the older versions had problem with Celerons and one had to update the BIOS but for straight PIIs there shouldn't be any issues...

P2-300 were sold mostly with LX chipset that does not support 100 MHz FSB.
You will most likely need a new mobo - BX or  more recent.

Hey Rip.. that 100 mhz ain't gonna do much for ya... check your mohterboard manual, most likely you will have to set some physical jumpers on the board to the new frequency and clock ratio. Or u could have one of the jumperless boards. I'll be online tonight, catch me on RW.
