Title: Quest for performance(need help)
Post by: Russian on September 22, 2001, 01:44:00 AM
Quest for performance.  :)

Lets start off with my system:
Asus CUV4X(old bios)
P3 750@772mhz
320MB pc100 RAM
SoundBlasterLive 5.1
Voodoo3 2K pci @ 150Mhz.
DTT3500 speakers
Win98Se.

One day I started looking at new video cards. I have many choices but my hart was layed on GeForce2 PRO 64 DDR Mb RAM. It was cheap at 110$, plus my old video card was getting old. I bought it on-line and it was sent to me in about 3-4 days. Right when I got it, I installed it quikly. Here's when problems begin. System became very unstabile. It would freeze and give me bunch of errors. 3D applications would freeze and  stop doing anything. Its time to start troubleshooting.  ;)
          I figured something was wrong with irq config. Checked, everything was fine. Now what can it be... Bios? I looked around: AGP4x, some other setting and little more other settings. I have no idea what they do so I messed around with only setting that I knew about; AGP setting. I swithed it to 2X to see what happens. System became more stable and  I was able to run 3DMark01. I got around 1100 on defoult setting. That was pafatic! Something else is wrong. I downloaded new 21.81 drivers. They gave me only 10 more points. Now what? What can I do? Switched to 1xAGP. That gave me little better score. Now I stopped right there. How? AGP2 should be faster. Right? I didn't understand, it was over my head and I had to get help. After few minutes of search I found this link. http://www.geforcefaq.com/faq.html#hw:gef:dxtc (http://www.geforcefaq.com/faq.html#hw:gef:dxtc)
I found some setting for Bios, changed them. Didn't help at all. Looked  around little bit more. Found overclocking utility, downloaded it. Looked around little more, found some AGP driver for my MOBO, downloaded it and installed it. 3DMark shows all most same thing. What can it be? Damaged video card? Not enough power? Bad video bios?  Damn, what can it be?!? Well, I have last thing to install, overclocking utility. OK done  :) it says that my core is 200mhz and ram 333mhz. Now how can that be? Its Pro not GTS. I noticed that in 3DMarks I had low fill rate( 430M/T). This is wrong, could have they shipped wrong video card. I restarted computer and looked at Video bios, no thats not it...it says that its Pro. What can it be? Why is ram at 333 and not 400 like it supposted be? I switched to 2xAGP, put SamuraiX  :cool: into PS2 and started overclocking my Ram. I would add 5-7mhz and run 4 tests to test stability.
Here they are:
340mhz score was 2508
Wow, something is working...
344=2539
350=2560
355=2565
No problems, no heat damage. I overclocked over 10% and card still runs. Lets go for final test.
400=.........2621
So card some how changed setting to 333mhz. Hmmm.... time to try 4xAGP. It should work now.  :rolleyes: Restarted, running 3DMarks. Comp froze.... Tryed again, same thing. Why? What should I do? HELP. Please...

Update.
I removed all cards from my computer and tryed to run 3DMarks on 4xAGP. No luck. Its not power problem. Then I tryed to remove all but I ram stick. That didn't help.
 Does anyone have idea why it can't run on 4xAGP?

 ps I will try to reinstall windows later today.
