Title: Ghost Stories, read.... If you dare
Post by: fbWldcat on October 17, 2010, 12:43:24 AM
Prologue: Oct. 30, 1906. It was a warm evening in the backwoods of Southeastern Tennessee. The only sounds being made were by hounds after an escaped convict. The prisoner was going to be killed by a relatively young method, the electric chair. The man escaped with only a note left behind saying "To you who thought you could contain me, stop me, restrain me, you were wrong, I am free to roam. I have a need to kill. Send the hounds, send all the men you can, but you cannot catch me in time to stop the massacre."

Once the note was found, an immediate man-hunt began. All the deputies, sheriffs, guards and hounds were dispatched. They warned the townspeople to be on the lookout for a man whose defining feature was the hook which replaced his hand. The hand which had been lost in the man's younger years.

Into the woods the possy went, deeper and deeper. After hours upon hours, the hounds finally had him at bay at the edge of a cliff. The convict had a decision to make. Jump and hope the fall wasn't enough to kill him, or be turned in to the prison to face death. One option had death as a certainty, one did not. He cried the words "ad mortem!" (Latin for "To death!") He turned and jumped. The hounds lost the scent, the search was delayed until morning.
The next day, the possy went to the cliff where the convict jumped. As the sheriff peered over, there was a drop of at least 80 feet, the sides of the cliff as smooth as a baby's behind. A body was never found. Over the next several months a string of murders swept across the middle South and struck fear in the hearts of everyone. The brutality and frequency of the killings amassed in a way that left the South gripped in fear until Oct. 30, 1916, ten years after the incident. Deaths have occurred at random around parts of the south on Oct. 31 every year since then, with no culprit ever being found....

A young couple was driving down a country pike one night after attending a halloween party. The husband dressed as a raggedy corpse much like you would find at the turn of the century. The wife, in a costume meant to "save lives." (shall we say... skimpy nurse, for effect). The two were talking, having a casual conversation about politics, weather, small talk. The husband caught something out of the corner of his eye and slammed on the brakes. It was a deer, a fine specimen, too, rare around these parts for this period of time. The husband and wife watched as it slowly made it's way across the road. The husband was about to begin driving again but noticed another deer, and another. Soon a herd of about 9 of the majestic animals were sitting in the middle of the road. The husband honked his horn, the deer became spooked, and scattered... The husband put the car into gear and began driving once again...

The conversation had picked up again, this time about food, what they were going to eat when they got home, neither of them had anything to eat at the party. The drive was smooth, as the wife told a crude joke, the husband began to laugh and took his eyes off the road. This was long enough for him to not notice the mass beginning to form in the headlights. The husband put his eyes on the road just in time to see a deer, a large buck. The car smashed into it at full speed....

After the accident, the couple was shocked at what had happened. They sat in silence for a few minutes before the husband said "I'm going to look for the deer, I'm going to inspect the damage done to the car, too." The husband got out, the only light coming from the one good illuminated Halogen bulb in the front of the car. The wife waited as the man searched around, she thought he seemed perplexed. The husband entered the car again. "The deer isn't there, no blood, no fur, no trace at all. The car is beat up pretty badly, though, I checked the engine: The transmission is out, so is one light and the brake fluid is leaking out. We're staying here for a while, get out your cell and call a tow truck......"

(To be continued)

The husband sat in his seat for a while mulling over what had just happened. He glanced up and saw a silhouetted figure just out of reach of the lights. It appeared to be an injured animal. "I see the deer, I'm taking my glock to finish the poor thing off." The man took his gun and loaded it with a full clip...

The husband exited the vehicle and began walking toward the mass. It began to move away from him, leaving the car's illumination completely. The man felt something was amiss, but shrugged it off. After all, it was a deer, plus it was wounded so it couldn't charge and attack with it's hooves. The wife watched as her husband moved farther and farther from the car. She looked at her phone, the battery was almost dead, she had already gotten a tow truck to come by in the morning, but she didn't want to spend the night in a cramped car. The last thing she needed was even more stress from sleeping awkwardly. She called the police department and told them the situation. They said they would send a cruiser around to pick them up. The ETA would be around 20-25 minutes, maybe more, there were a lot of underage drinkers being brought in as well as those brought in for disorderly conduct.

The wife looked out the window, saw her husband moving away from her. She couldn't help feeling like something was wrong, she called for her husband to come back to the car. He replied from a ways out that he would in a minute, he had to find the deer first. After all, how far could an injured deer move? It must've been nearly obliterated in the crash and it was a miracle the damn thing was still up and moving. Knowing her husband was going to come back gave her a great relief. She sighed, and felt a sudden tiredness. It began to get windy, she rolled up the windows, closed the doors and waited for the sweet feeling of sleep to overcome her. She drifted into a shallow snooze, and her hand fell onto the locking mechanism. She was asleep....

The wife had dreams of a man running through the woods, being chased by some unknown entity, just as the dream was about to reach a terrifying climax.... She awoke suddenly to a scratching sound outside the car. She looked, nothing was there. She shrugged it off as being the leaves rustling. She looked at the clock, she had only been asleep for a couple of minutes. Her husband wasn't back yet, a few hundred yards away she heard the loud report of a 9mm shot, then another, and another, until it seemed there couldn't possibly be anything more in the clip. She began to get worried and was about to roll down the window to call for her husband when she saw the figure of a man just outside the illumination of the car lights. She gave a sigh of relief, and rolled down the window....

The wife screamed in delight "Honey!!! Where were you? I was worried sick! Did you put the poor animal out of it's misery?!"

She looked at the figure, a sudden cold front coming through had made the temperature slightly cooler with a definitive icy breeze. She rolled up the window a ways. "Honey!? Honey, it is getting cold out, you better come into the car, the cruiser will be here in a sec to give us a lift back to town! By the way! Did you kill the poor animal? Did it suffer!?"

She rolled up the window and watched the figure slightly nod it's head. It took a step forward, and then another, until it was almost fully illuminated. It had to have been her husband, she'd know that build and those raggedy clothes anywhere. She was about to roll down the window again when the figure left the beams of light....

She wanted to go after him but that same tiredness as before overcame her. She fought off the urge to give in and sleep. In the end, she couldn't help it, and drifted back. She awoke to the sound of metal on metal screeching. Just behind her on the passenger side door. She turned around and what she saw sent a chill down her spine, it was her husband, or what she thought was her husband. The figure sprinted away as soon as she glanced at it and she watched as it ran far behind the car, and ran across the road. twenty-five minutes had gone by since the accident and no police had arrived. At this point the woman was completely terrified, she didn't know what was happening. She re-locked the doors and sat in a fetal position for about ten minutes, just facing forward, watching the leaves dance in and out of the beams of light.

She stared forward until she heard a violent repeating thumping sound. Like something was trying to enter the vehicle and the handle wasn't working. There was a distinct metallic clanking that went with this thumping. The wife looked behind at the door and saw nothing but the red and blue police cruiser lights coming over the hill far, far behind the car.

***********************************************************************************

Thw wife watched as the policeman approached her vehicle. She watched as he tried to open the door. It was all she could do to unlock the door. The rest of what happened was a blur to her. The cop asked her questions and she answered them all.

The cop radioed in that they had a missing man in the woods around the area and to send back-up and an ambulance.

The back-up arrived a few minutes later obviously drawn to this matter which was more important than drunk and disorderly teenagers. More back-up was called and soon, half the county police force was out at the scene of the deer crash. A search party was sent out but returned only moments later. The wife, sitting in the back of the cruiser, watched as the police conversed for a while. They looked at her with a sort of awe and sadness. One of the officers came over to her and told her that her husband was dead. She was told he was found within a few hundred feet of the scene... His body covered with deep puncture wounds and he was found with the antlers of a large buck, sharpened, impaled in him.

*****

A deputy walked by to inspect the car. He inspected it in the front, to the right of the vehicle, he found a deep scratch, apparently caused by a sharpened object. He inspected the back, and finally the left side of the vehicle. The policeman found a hook, a large hook, almost like he had seen in pirate moves before: hanging from the door handle........
*****
Could it have been a clue to the man's murder? Perhaps. But used as evidence or not, a suspect has yet to be named. Perhaps the killer is still wandering the mountains of Appalachia or the swamps of Louisianna, the rolling hills of Kentucky or the beautiful land of the Mississippi, even to this very day.

And so ends this thrilling horror story. Hope you all enjoyed it.

This is from my friends note section on facebook.

He is a DPS officer in training

This happened 10-8-10

We were driving on the track as we were instructed... I was in third and we were chasing a tahoe in a training exercise. I saw the orange lightbar and taillights of the two other cars in front of me.. It started getting dark and foggy. The radio chatter between the four cars was normal. Suspect location and trash talk. Driving the car directly in front of me was karen white. She was just a few feet ahead of me. And in front of her was Larry koepp. As he rounded turn 5 I heard koepp start his usual trashtalk " you guys better get use to losing cuz Im ab- s**t!" I saw his taillights light up and spin out of sight through the freakishly thick fog I saw whites taillights light up too.. she swerved. I heard the tires squeal. And the crunch of fiberglass. I came around the corner and saw a shape in the road. Like a shadow. I locked my brakes but wound up skidding through it. Sanders in the car behind me swerved to miss me and came to a screeching halt. I drew my flashlight out of my belt and ran toward karen's smoking Vic. She was unhurt but crying. She kept saying "I saw his eyes I saw his eyes" I left her with sanders and went to find koepp. By now the instructors were getting close with their cars. And in the light of their cars I saw koepps Vic. He was still in the drivers seat. " koepp?" I asked... " youll think Im nuts bro..but there was a dude in the road" "nah man" I said " just the light playing tricks on you" " I saw a man!" he said. Just then the instructor came to take koepp to the infirmary. I heard the instructor mumble something about it "happening again" as he walked off. Sanders heard it too. Our course was canceled for the night and we got interviewed on what we saw. With particular focus on the shadow thing in the road. I think its bull. But others dont agree.. They think its some kind of spirit.

I commented, and asked some questions.

Some of the creepier responses

Other than what I said he said in the note.. nothing. He dismissed us. But here's the odd part. All the cars have dash cams. They ALL went out at the exact same time. And the weird part is.. You see static but hear the tires screeching in karens ... And then a fuzzy laughter or something

Here's what happened.. The accidents happened. And koepp told sanders that he saw the dos man. It was just us 3 standing there. Sanders and I went to go turn in our gun belt and car keys to the creepy old clerk.. He asked us what happened. ...We both said we didn't know. Then the geezer said " he showed himself didn't he?" we asked who.. He said "the trooper"...."the ghost trooper" it sounded like a bad ghost story. Til he said.. " he died in his squad car on turn 5 and walks these grounds to this very day.."See More

I saw a shadow on the road. Thats it. I couldn't stop in time and went through it.

They were trainees. And I cant confirm or deny anything. But I know them. They are in the top 10 of the class like me. They don't freak over nothing. And I've never EVER seen Karen lose her cool EVER.

:aok Bravo, Tupac. That's just plain creepy.... I love it   :O

My Bro, formerly known as FBRufus, used to work at a horsefarm in central KY which has the first brick building every built in the state. It has been struck by lightning and burned down several times. He told me that he never went into the building while on guard duty (he was a night-watchman btw) or any other time. Mainly because every time he went near, he heard weird noises.

EDIT: the building is a pile of old brick, rubble, ash, and a very weak foundation, now.

What bothers me the most about it, is that these are police officers. The descriptions, and the instructors reactions really bother me. IDK why

It's the way the human psyche works. The police have authority, almost dominion over the common folk, we hold them to a higher esteem and when something like this pops up, you have to think... What if?

I'd say that it's a coincidence- the "eyes" were probably the headlights of their own car.  As for the cameras, it falls into the realm of the unknown.  Human beings' minds have a tendency to look for patterns where none exist, and this results in "sightings".

Until you can bring hard evidence that indeed there are "souls" and that these souls manifest themselves in the physical world, all of these events can be chalked up to anomalies, coincidences, and/or outright explained.

Science can make no claim on the supernatural, in fact, one of its axioms is that we don't have to use it to explain things.  However, philisophically, if souls are undetectable while within the body, why do they suddenly obtain physical manifestations?

Therefore, ghosts are most likely patterns of events that we can deem part of psychology, and most likely not manifestations of the conciousesses of those who have passed.

In this life there is no such thing as impossible. Anything is possible, crack a political joke, poke fun at sci-fi, but anything can happen. Whether or not science says it can. How much do we know about the world in which we live? Not much. I'm not saying I believe in ghosts, but a manifestation of supernatural beings isn't as far-fetched as an elevator to a space station was in the 40's.

I have friend who worked night shift at one of the state prisons down in the Hudson Valley that has a wing supposedly so haunted that they can't keep a regular officer on post there, as they all change their jobs not long after starting on that spot. They stuck him in there for three consecutive nights when he first got there. First night, they officer he relieved just gave him the keys and told him to lock himself in the office, his relief would be there in the morning to let him out. When he asked what he meant, the guy just said "you'll find out". All that night lights kept turning on and off, the TV kept turning on and flipping through stations, he kept hearing footsteps following him around on his rounds and walking around the corridors when he was sitting at his desk, and even heard the door to the stairs open and someone walking up it around 2am, complete with jingling keys. By about 4, he'd locked himself in. The second night, he locked himself in about midnight after seeing a woman standing at the top of the stairs looking out the window (in an all male facility) on one of his rounds. The third night, he locked himself in as soon as he got there and waited for morning. The fourth night, they tried to stick him up there again and he threatened to quit. Never worked there again.

Another friend who worked at the same facility about 3 years later on the day shift told me that in that same building they used to have reports about once a week of someone seeing a woman staring out the windows of the top floor, and he himself saw what they referred to as the 'black man' or 'shadow man' in the basement- you'd walk past the building or around it on a security check and you'd see a solid black silhouette following you around and occasionally staring out at you (at least they assumed it was staring at them, as it had no face). They all say that whenever they saw it they'd get horrible chills, even in the middle of summer, and had the distinct feeling that it didn't want them there and would hurt them if it could get out.

I worked at one where a female guard was raped and murdered about 15 years ago (just a few years before I got there) and a lot of female officers at night have said that they can hear screaming coming from the corridor where they think she was raped. Officers and inmates have also seen a female officer wearing the old uniform that we don't wear any more walking the block she used to work at night on occasion. I never saw anything there, but I did get a very uneasy feeling (and still swear I heard someone talking in an empty building) when I used to make my rounds in that part of the prison. Not enough to scare me off, but more than enough to make me finish my rounds as quick as possible and get out of there!

This one is really creepy. My sister had just moved out of the house and into her new house with her new husband. She was still getting used to not having everything at her disposal in the house. She had turned everything off, left the building and forgot something and came back. Well, we used to have a mirror across to the right of our stairs leading up to the living room. The huge big screen TV was exactly across from it. My sister saw the TV on in the mirror... And it was on. As soon as she hit the top step... it turned off and it got a bit chillier. She told us about it and it creeped me out. Actually happened to me, once, same occurance.

Something ELSE creepy just happened, my dad was downstairs and I was on the computer, just as I clicked POST, a loud THUMP could be heard from the kitchen... where he was, he looked out the window, in the fridge, nothing fell.

First One: Your TV takes time to turn on and off, and thus as the last thing turned off, it could have simply still been on

Second One: That's your ventilation, in my house I could say that I hear a man walking around the attic, but I know that it's just my thumping A/C

Just because something isn't practical doesn't make it impossible.  Ghosts don't even have a reason to exist, we have yet to prove that you live on, post-mortem.

I've taken pictures of water dripping from a ceiling and told people they were 'orbs', about 80% of the people who see them say they can see a face in it. And a lot of them argue with me that the photo is completely genuine when I took it and know full well what it's of.

This one is perfect example- I took it at Fort Ontario in June of '08. Most people I show it to see a 'face' in what is just condensation dripping from the ceiling. And don't believe me when I tell them what it really is, they just tell me I'm a skeptic.

I wish I had cool stories to tell, but not once in my entire life have I ever experienced anything that remotely seemed supernatural.

I have family members that swear they've witnessed "spooky" things.

I'll allow for possibilities, but I'll only be a true believer when I see it myself.

When my mom was a little girl she lived in Paris, Texas. On several occasions, when she was alone in the house or her room, she would see the figure of a man walk by her doorway out of the corner of her eye. As she would turn to look, she would be able to see brown shoes and a brown pair of pants, but the man would walk by too quickly for her to see his face. She would then run to the doorway and look out into the hallway...but it would be empty.

Don't assume I haven't taken things into account. Our A/C has never made a noise in the time I've been at the house, nor has it since the incident. The A/C doesn't even run through the kitchen, the closest it gets is about 20ft away. It came from the kitchen facing AWAY from the A/C unit. So it wasn't the cooling system.

I don't know what TV you have been with your entire life, but ours powers off instantly. My sister came back in the house after several minutes being away. I've already thought through all the possibilities, thanks.

I have pics of ghost orbs from inside a 15' deep kiva at Mesa Verde near four corners.  Nothing reflective in the kiva and over 2,000 year old religious kiva.  VERY distinctive ghost orb.

We lived in a house in Midlothian, VA that was definitely haunted.  It was a contemporary and less than 15 years old.  Our first night there the wife made dinner.  As we both looked at the rice she was making on the stove, the crockery pot with glass cover violently cracked, sending almost done (and only on low heat) rice and broken pot all over the stove and floor...weird event #1.

Same house a few weeks later, my radio co-host comes over with her deaf Dalmatian so we can dog-sit for the evening.  The dog comes in and looks up near the ceiling and won't stop barking...then seems to "follow" something into our bedroom, still barking and looking near the ceiling.  The dog seemed to "see" something and bark at it...chasing it up the stairs at one point on & off during the evening....weird event #2.

Same house a few months later, my kids (then 9 and 10 at the time) keep telling us that in the evening and in the night that a "dirty light ball" comes up the stairs slowly and that they can hear footsteps on the stairs but no one is there.  This happens every few weeks or so the whole almost 2 years we live there...weird event #3.

Same house a few weeks later, we are all sitting at dinner, talking about the strange haunting events when a 5" glass snow globe violently cracks and the water starts dripping slowly at first and then cascading down the cabinet.  It had been up there for months, untouched.  After it first  cracked, we were all looking at it...weird event #4.

Same house---every family member tells of times they are sitting watching television when out of the corner of their vision to the left, they see the dark shadow of someone walking from the dining room to the kitchen.  Always happens in the late evening to late at night...always a dark shadow....weird (ongoing) event #5.

There was a dark brown stain on the ceiling of the living room.  The stain would have originated in a bedroom we never used (when we initially moved there the kids wouldn't go in there) that I had for a Exercycle room.  I only worked out in there once when we first moved there and felt creeped out--like something was watching me--and I was the only one in the room with the door closed.  It would also turn cold, even in the Summer when we weren't running the A/C.  The next time I went in to work out the Exercycle was broken...almost like "something" didn't want me in the room....weird event #6.

Happy to move.

I've debated wether I should tell these stories. Some may call me crazy, but i feel that others may be interested.

Several years ago my wife and I were living in an old mining house down the street from our current home. We were settling into bed for the night when we heard....Thump......Thump.... ...Thump coming from downstairs. I grabbed my Mossberg and headed downstairs.

Thump....Thump.....Thump....

As I got further down the stairs I realized that I was hearing the rocking chair in our living room as it banged against the wall. (As if someone were sitting in it, rocking back and forth.)

At the bottom of the stairs I could still hear it. Thump....Thump.....Thump.... I took a deep breath, steeled my nerves for a confrontation, and turned the corner.

I watched as the rocking chair slowly came to a stop. I immediately cleared every room in the house and checked all the doors and windows. (All locked.)

A few years later, while our daughter was a newborn, we set her in her crib for the night and went out to watch some t.v.

After a few minutes we heard music playing in her bedroom. She was sound asleep when we laid her down, and we DID NOT have any music on.

We immediately recognized the song that was playing. It was her favorite lulliby. (The one that always made her smile and feel very relaxed.) This particular song also just happened to be the LAST track on the c.d.

We turned it down and stood in the room until it finished, at which point we left. The fact of the matter was that we felt no fear or ill will was involved.

These are 2 examples that I have. Now I gotta get the hair on the back of my neck to lay down again.

That 'cold' sensation is a result of a self-fullfilling prophecy:

Given: You are a human being of normal function and descent
Given: You are alone, or at least very far from others in the situation you are speaking of
Given: You are not aware of what is going on behind you do to being heavily involved in a task

Thus, your body naturally wishes to return to the herd, where you are less likely to be eaten by a predator.  This however, conflicts with your concious decision to remain alone.  This elicts a fight-or-flight response, in which your adrenal glands begin to release adrenaline.

This causes a cold sensation to run through you, causing more fear, and causing more adrenaline to be released.  With the stress running, your own eyes, ears and even your mind will play tricks on you.  A harmless shadow when in a crowd will seem like something dangerous when you are aroused, ready to react.

The longer you stay, the more you want to leave.  As you stay longer, your body will conceive of a method to get you to return to the group.  You were built to survive, and if that means going crazy, well that is what it will take.

Simply put, your own brain will create "ghosts" in order to keep you alive, and away from situations that could potentially turn deadly.

For example, a dark area.  You can't see in the dark, and thus an animal who can could eat you.  Your body knows this, and will try to keep you away.  When you simply ignore your survival instincts, your body will become aroused in order to compensate for the foolish action you have taken.

This results in a clash between instinct and reason, in which instinct can create its own world in order to achieve its ends.  For instance, if you were to hear a "thump" while standing in the dark area, you would interperet it as a footstep of a potential predator, not a rock falling.

You are built to survive, and if your body senses danger, it will do whatever it can to alert you to it, and if that does not work, remove you from it post haste.

Thank you for that bit of 5th grade health class. Stop trying to disprove everything. Did you ever enjoy Halloween as a small kid?

Penguin may be a disbeliever because like me, he has never seen, heard or felt anything that can't be explained away.

I, on the other hand have heard too many such stories from very credible sources to discount everything, so I leave them in the "realm of the unknown."

I did and still do  :aok  I'll be going to a Halloween party, and I'm thinking of dressing as one of the pilots from AH2.  It's fun for me, since I get to see what gets people's hearts pounding in terror.  All the while, I know that it's all because of the most astounding thing I can think of: imagination.

Your parents told you that ghosts are a figment of your imagination, and they essentially are.  If you don't have an explaination, you can dump it on the paranormal.  This is how the first ghost stories came about, from unexplained occurences, and problems in everyday life.

Finally, if ghosts interact with our physical world (at the very least, being seen requires you reflect light), they must be inside of it.  That which interacts with the natural world requires a natural manifestation, and that, is thus required to obey the laws of physics.

Therefore, ghosts cannot both be supernatural and exist in our realm, as that would violate the laws of physics which they are required to follow to interact with us.

Well, stop posting, you're putting a damper on the thread. This thread was created with my intention that people would read and share spooky stories in the spirit of the season. So at least post something creepy.
