I was curious of two things mainly. Is the new sound engine in use again? I completely lost track since it got added, removed, then added, and removed again, then I stopped playing for a bit through numerous patches...
And secondly, there were rumors going around that the new sound engine would allow interior and exterior sounds. Is this still the case? I guess what I'm ultimately asking is what the purpose of the upgrade was, or if the plans for the new engine are still in the works.
I know the new engine has been discussed rather rampantly in the past, but thought I'd see if perhaps anyone had more up-to-date information.

So what exactly what improved with the new system? It seems the same to me.

I don't know if it's different or not, but I can hear vox in my headset, and the rest of the sounds through my external speakers.
That's kind of cool.

The only changes I noticed were for the worse. Yes, it's supposed to work better for lower quality sound cards. The changes I noticed with my SoundBlaster, though, were the extreme drop in volume for gear and flaps noises (good thing I actually count how many times I press the button, since I can't hear them any more), the addition of oddities in relation to distance for bomb/shell explosions, the need to crank my mic volume and boost to the point where I blow peoples' ears out in other games if I forget to turn it back down, and the complete breaking of the sounds for ship guns (try firing a 5" twin mount on the back of a cruiser...it's rather hellish).

True, some players have heard degraded quality, while others have heard no change, while still others found increased quality. There are so many variables in the PC world that it is nearly impossible to make everyone's experience the same. Also, if you are using a custom soundpack, that may be the culprit as well. With the new sound engine, comes some issues with older soundpacks. Either try default sounds or Ranger's excellent new Platinum soundpack.

I want to do this, but it does not work for me. Anything special you have to do?(yes i clicked the boxes)

This is a big one I'd like to see figured out, as there are a fair number of people that you can barely hear talking over Vox.

Vox took a huge hit with the new system. They did however improve it by adding more controls.

Now that someone mentioned it, I do notice that I've had a harder time hearing people over vox since I've been back.
Would really, REALLY love to have interior and exterior sound ability. I have Fruda's sound packs, and have the planes I fly most on interior, while the rest are on exterior sounds. When a plane set to an exterior sounds fly's by it sounds too damn cool!
The vox over headphones and sound over speakers is very interesting. Might make me consider getting my bluetooth earpiece set up on my comp for use w/ vox! Do the speakers make your vox transmissions difficult to understand?

Vox sounds the same to me and some of the sounds are a bit better.
