Title: Betty torp drop height and torp effectiveness
Post by: Krusty on October 19, 2010, 09:35:35 PM
I know, I know, another J-aircraft link, but I was reading a lot of it today and sent it to my e-mail account for when I got home.

According to an interrogation of Captain Kameo Sonokawa, found here:

http://www.j-aircraft.com/research/interrogation_of_captain_sonokaw.htm

" Although the ordnance department claimed that the torpedoes could be dropped at an altitude of 500-metres, we found by experience that only 10 per cent would run properly at 200 meters and 50 per cent at 100 meters. Consequently, an effort was made to drop at from 20-30 meters. Since the aircraft torpedo was dropped at short range the low altitude afforded protection because of depressing limit of AA guns."

That's about 90 feet and he doesn't say how fast he was going. I know we have a couple of different torpedoes modeled in-game. Is the torp on the Ki67 and the B5N the same as will be on the Betty, or are they all slightly different in-game?

EDIT: P.S. Just one more thread, look for it soon!

Last I checked, the torpedoes on the Ki-67 and B5N2 were Luftwaffe torpedoes.  I do know that the Japanese torpedoes were improved as the war progressed so I would expect the Ki-67's torpedo to have higher drop tolerances to the G4M1 and B5N2's.
