I here that they just slashed the budget on ocean going and harbor tugs.

Dang the luck.

Have fun with that.

going to be refloated in about 3h from now apparently.

off the rocks clearly marked on the admiralty's own charts.

which even local yachtsmen know to avoid.

In the meantime as the tide goes out more and more of her is exposed. you can now clearly see most of the propulsion system, which is conveniently pointed landward. up til this morning you needed security clearance to look at this.

heads will surely roll for this ...

The same training as some Americans get it would seem. :O

USS Port Royal (CG-73). The Navy estimated that repairs would cost between $25 and $40 million.

The same Captain that went to the Bar and asked for a double shot of whiskey, the bartender looked at him and asked if he wanted it on the rocks.....  :rofl

I would have to get a large bucket of golf balls and set up right along that shoreline.

It happens a lot in fishing. I've seen five boats beached. Strong currents pushed one onto the beach in the harbor while he was trying to manuever in a small spot to dock. The others were pretty much straight ocean -> beach. No excuse heh. No excuse for those professional military ships.

I almost did it one morning...tired as hell, in thick fog, went too far to one side of the channel. Dano came up and asked if I was  checking how accurate the charts were. Luckily the tide was in heh and we didn't scrape on anything and I woke up quick. Coasties were out in one of their '47's for the 6am bar report...came over and guided me out.

This one happened the summer before last. Guy fell asleep on wheelwatch with autopilot on heading for home. Didn't wake up until his boss smacked him upside the head. I think they had $80k of tuna on board. Took them two days to unload catch/fuel/etc and tow it off the beach. Spent the next 10months missing the crab season while getting repaired in dry dock.

I was standing behind the camera drinking coffee and bs'ing with an old timer when this was taken  :)

No excuse for Military, as you said Scotch. I know we're all human, but those guys get paid way too much to mess up like that.

There's too many eyes and ears on those ships, working normal hours, to have something like that happen...I mean seriously, wtf? Their technology is a little better than what I had on a 66 year old wood troller/crabber too. :lol

The dumb butts on that one really had ZERO excuses...hell you can see the sand bar in the water there in that photo of the Port Royal...my god we have all recruited idiots into our collective navies.

I agree. No excuse, we go through far too much training to make a mistake like that. I do not agree with the wage part of your comment.

I remember that, I could see it from my house. Perfectly clear weather, too. No unusual tides, nothing to possibly mess up even the greenest JO.

Pay must have changed quite a bit since I was in then.  Exactly how much does putting
your life on the line run then?

Something like 1250 a month for an O1 fresh out of school IIRC. But that's keeping in mind I'm getting up to $180,000 to spend on school, plus $375 every semester for books and about $325 in spending money courtesy of the Department of the Navy. If you make it to Flag Officer, you're looking at up to $14k a month, and all of this is not counting housing allowances, COLA, etc.

Dont know aboot the UK, but EVERY US Navy ship is forced to pick up an arrogant OVERPAID "pilot" when returning to port. CIC, bridge WO, everybody deffers to the ninny. So if the ship runs aground, its on the head of the CIVILIAN pilot. Dont know aboot the bubble-head fleet, I was on a skimmer USS Fox CG-33 =)

A local Dee Why surfer who used to get angry with the weekend tourist crowds and would set up on the point lobbing golf balls on them.

No, I was just giving a general answer to your question on pay. CG CC is an O-5 billet, so without having my numbers in front of me, I would guess you're talking about 6K a month, +/- about 1k, assuming you're on track for time in service.

I would imagine not having a keel would make maneuvering a submarine in a narrow channel tricky.
