Title: AvA alert system ideas
Post by: Dawger on October 23, 2010, 06:55:27 AM
I am looking for a system that would allow folks to alert others in an easy fashion when they are looking for some AvA time.

We use text messages in my squad but that isn't going to work for the AvA for lots of reasons.

What I am looking for is some sort of instant messaging that is simple and doesn't require a lot of effort for folks to setup and use to alert a group of people.

I am looking for ideas.

How about setting up friends in Steam. When you log on to steam the friends list will notify you that AVA is up and populated?

I absolutely love Steam and won't get PC games any other way. No discs to lose, easy to reinstall when switching / upgrading machines, and none of the problems others have complained of. Much better than CDs/DVDs with draconian copy-protection measures built in that DO screw with your system.

So there, now you've heard one good thing.

I don't use any of the social media aspects of it.

I'm really looking for something that doesn't require downloading or registration.

Probably doesn't exist.

i liked your calender idea.

the other possibility would be if there were a way for someone to make an announcement much like they do for the special events?

Calendar is a way to look ahead.

The alert is just an informal way to let other AvA guys you are in the arena during off hours. I may just start an AIM group or something similar. I don't think I'm going to find anything close to what I am looking for.

Text invite system maybe?  Sign up for alerts and multiple moderators have the ability to send said alerts based on what they see.

I'll try Google Talk if someone is willing...........

my google talk email is dawgeraceshigh@gmail.com if someone wants to dive in and give this a shot. If you already have a gmail account google talk is easy to download and get going.

We could always make a facebook group and then subscribe to it via SMS. This way when you're logging on just go to FB and say you're getting on. Anyone else subscribed with SMS will get a text message on their cell phone letting them know what you just posted. At least that's how it works with individual people IDK if it works the same with groups.

You really don't have anything to worry about when it comes to FB. A little bit of common sense goes a long way with preventing getting hacked. I never accept any friend requests from people I don't know and I don't click on any links someone I don't know sends me in a message. Its just like someone sending you a "Bank of Nigeria" email. Don't be stupid and you have nothing to worry about. While I do have my address and cell number on my FB page I set it up so only friends can see it, and even then its not like those things are hard to find. Just pick up a phone book and there I am.

i have one that is a sovereign bank check. i went to the bank and asked them if they would cash it and they said yes, i then informed the manager that it was fake and they verified it! it was pretty interesting.

isn't there a way to get permissions to announce from the arena when there's people in there?

kind of like they do for sea's?

if so, then when one or two go in, pop the announcement out to the other arenas, and see what happens?

i do that almost every time im in there. its a system message. the admins have the rights to do them. i almost always announce that there are people in the AVA!
