Title: Who needs a wing?
Post by: Spatula on May 17, 2000, 09:13:00 PM
Dont get this post the wrong way, im just curious that if i blow 1/2 a wing off or a whole wing off a plane how in gods green earth can you fly it back to your base and LAND the dang thing??

I say this cause we all know that when a wing goes AWOL (cause someone shot it off) it is still possible to land the crate. Or on the opposite side of the fence, you blow someones wing to toejam, its falls off (you see it flutter round) and the con lands     (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/mad.gif)
I think this should be remedied.

Is this possible to do in RL? I doubt it very much. Not ever had the experience myself (two wings for me). I would have thought the lift from the intact wing would cause the place to spiral quite badly (fatally even...)

Comments, suggestions??

I won't touch the realism issue, but I RTB or ditch clean regularly with one wing.  I actually got two kills the other night, AFTER I had lost one of them.

It appears that simple alternate control surface deflection is enough to maintain almost a level flight.  I found that the F4U is easier than the Nikki (George) to do this.  I do drift in the bad wing direction, but no more than after a few beers on a Saturday night out.

Spat,

Perhaps the graphic that we see when it shows "wing damage" does not have degrees of severity?  But the actual damage model does have several degrees?

You get hit, you look out and see 1/2 a wing but actually the damage was light?

I don't know...just guessing!

If the whole wing leaves a plane in real life there's no way it will survive.  However, large pieces of outer wing panel can be lost without a catastrophe.  The F8F had wings which were designed to shed the outer 3 foot of wing when more than 5 or so G's were pulled.  Test pilots found that sometimes only 1 panel broke off, so they would have to land with one wing 3 feet shorter than the other.  I think they even landed on carriers this way.

In AH it looks like when you lose the portion of the wing where the aeleron is, you still have enough control to land.  I've never landed a plane where the entire wing was gone.

some planes are a little easier to control w a missing wingtip.

seems like the p38 with its 52 foot wiingspan survives ok enough to rtb with a wingtip missing but its only controlable in level flight.

109G-10 is impossible to land with missing wingtip.

Not so with 190, landed those many times.

try landing a spit with half wing  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
then try 190  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
..now continue fly 190's and join jg2  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

couldnt be easier

Now loosing a wing tip and having some forma of control over ya plane i can understand, but still fail to see how a plane with 1 wing can still 'fly' in a controlled fashion.

And thats a good point (whoever made it earlier), that what we see may not be exactly what 'is'. If this is the case, i still think that if ya see an entire wing come off, then you should actually have no wing; and ergo ya spiral to ya death. It's possible this could be a bug. I'll see if i can get it on film (if i remember to turn it on).

Nup, nothing against the JG2 lads but i think they're presence is WELL represented. JG2 is a huge sqaud by AH standards. And besides, if i did that wardog (and the rest of the 357th) would spend the rest of their lives hunting my lilly white ass. I'd rather have the Torques, Citabrias, Wardogs, GTRs on my side of the fence, and they a great bunch too  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) perhaps you should join 357th  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
