Had a pair of Bose X's that were looking pretty rough, traded for LS zulu's. Good docking system though.

I've always felt that Bose and Dolby were two of the largest Cons ever played on audiophiles.

JBL and Klipsch always made far superior speakers.

Bose' whole thing was rear firing speakers...bass in particular..and that was around long before them...specifically in musicians amp gear.  Heck..the old Leslie speakers for keyboards used to have a speaker that actually spun around in circles inside the cabinet.

Dolby noise reduction....I still don't get.

Marketing........Marketing.    Ever seen a JBL or Klipshe commercial on a major network?      :D

While Bose does a lot of marketing they actually employ more engineers than anything else.   I would also argue that Bose is not a brand for audiophiles, and if you watch the commercials that's not who they're marketing too.

Being a bit of an audiophile myself and being in the industry one of the things my clients ask me all the time when I tell them about Bose is "would you put it in your own home?" and the honest answer is "no".  I'm not a Bose customer though, I spent an hour a couple nights backs dampening my turntable to try and eliminate vibration and re-balancing the tonearm.  So while I wouldn't put one in my house I wouldn't hesitate to put one in my parents home.  It's better than the TV sound they have now, the system is reliable, easy to set up and use and I wouldn't get phones calls all the time asking me why it wasn't working or what button to push.

Different products for different kinds of people.

In the end that's what counts. :)

If you ever get the point where you need to replace the Onkyo for some reason I would also consider something like a Denon or Marantz.  The amplifier can actually have a pretty big impact on the sound.  Both the Denon and Marantz are considered to be a little on the "warm" side in terms of sound characteristics.  Generally speaking the Onkyo tends to be a little on the bright side, horns (like Klipsch) tend to trend in that direction as well.

Whenever possible try to hear the combination first and let your ears decide.

I have the factory upgrade Bose sytem in my 05 Chevy 2500 crew cab and like it alot in there.

My Daughter's 2010 camaro has the factory upgrade Boston Acoustics system in it. She likes it but wants a tad more base. I'll be adding that soon.

When I used to play gigs I often had to rent a P.A. system, one day the hire bloke showed me his new Bose P.A. and asked me if I would like to christen it for him. I was looking at it thinking "gee, its kinda small" but took it with me anyway. I asked for that one from then on, a better sound than some of his huge P.A.s and I didn't need a light truck to transport it or a gorrilla to help set it up.

I have to admit that I've sort of wanted to play with the Bose Wave Cannon.

:)

Parents have one in the kitchen that sounds pretty good to me. My dad is an audio nut it likes it better than his stereo and speakers he has set up in their game room.
