Title: Freespace 2 Source Code Project
Post by: Wolfala on October 28, 2010, 03:44:39 PM
I thought i'd put this up for the few of us who remember/still play this gem.

Back in the late 90s, the space opera was the thing, as was the golden age of flight simming. Freespace and Freespace 2 were the finesed evolutions of this genre of gaming. Volition, which has split from Interplay developed the game which had MASSIVE capital ships (kilometers long), fighters, interceptors, bombers, and just general ship of the line mayham.

A few years later it more or less faded as Xbox and other things grabbed attention, but the coders at Volition released the source code for the modding community to take hold and grab. What ended up happening was more or less a complete rebuild of the engine to modern standards - for relaxed newtonian physics space craft blasting under the most rediculous graphic environment imagined.

The place to get this gem mod is:  http://scp.indiegames.us/ (http://scp.indiegames.us/)

You will need the original FreeSpace 2 game - which for some can be a pain in the bellybutton to find if you don't have the discs. For that, and $5.99 you goto GoodOlGames (GOG.COM) and you'll be back in business

There all sorts of community made stuff for Freespace 2.  There is even a stand alone Babylon 5 mod http://babylon.hard-light.net/ (http://babylon.hard-light.net/).
