My point was that that with a large map and large numbers, there is no motivation to interact with folks beyond your 3 wing squad.
I stumbled over that remark and it made me curious. We hear a lot about all those multi wings squads that seem to be the norm in LW arenas.
I did not try to determine their impact in gameplay... I just wanted to know how many multi wing squads there are, and how many players are organized in them.
The result was a bit of a surprise to me:

The classification of one of the two 3-wing squads is disputable... I counted the 3 different Finnish squads as one multi-wing squads.
(Please note that I did not account for active/inactive members)

As a bit of a family, a community, 71 Squadron RAF doesn't like to kick out folks that are less active. While we might have "3 wings" -- we are still moderate in the amount of real players at any given time that will fly together.
Personally, because of this experience with the comraderie of 71 Squadron, "multi wings" doesn't really affect me so much as "horde squads" -- those squads where they can't engage a single con, run screaming for the hills, and only try to sneak or suicide pork fields with a solid wave of 12 planes or so.
These squads, although smaller, are far more annoying (and, dare I say "lame") than any multi-wing squad with a more laissez faire style of flying.

You did WHAT!? :furious
:D

we have pie charts at work enough said.

I think the squads with more than one wing should be different shades of pink.
That is all.

I think squads with just only one wing should be a nice shade of green.

Unnecessary Point of Order:
No such thing as a squadron with multiple wings. A wing has multiple SQUADRONS.
:D

Who's got an 8 wing squad? vDevils? :old:

Me fail much. I bow my head in shame :o
(To my defense: I'm just using common AH terms ;))

Claim Jumpers. They could stuff all members in 4 wings though (even less when dropping inactive members)

Like Krusty said about the 71 RAF also can be said for POTW. We dont kick out members who have become inactive.....unless your name is twitchy.

[/quote] o ok just wondering

Took a further look at the numbers, ore more precisely: man-hours played.
Single wing (sorry Saxman ;)) squad members did play ~17.5 hours this tour, multi wing squad members 22.8.
So the level of activity in multi squads is higher, be it due to having a higher percentega active members or be it from having more "dedicated" players with higher individual play time.
But still, simple squads have 2.5 times more man-hours played total than the few multi squads.

intresting discussion
well, as CO of Loose Deuce i allways try to have an active team togehter. That means when people have RL issues, and don't fly anymore over a couple of month they still will have acess to our forum, but being not listed anymore on the roster and being no longer inside the LD in the arenas. For nothing in the world i would open a second wing!
Why? because i fear loseing the team spirit, internal discussions and humans thinking of "theirs and ours" will kill the team spirit for sure. I play MMO since the internet is avaible and it was allways like that. Maybe it depends on the way you like to play, we LD are a pure Fighter based squadron, so its important to know each other in the way of his fighting style, maybe its not nessacery for pure base taker squads like the Claim jumpers. I can understand ppl don't wanna eject other from their squad, its allways a hard decission for me but in some reason inevitably the only way it works

With envy? Puh-leez.
Now maybe green around the gills with disgust perhaps.
Having said that, I'm just trolling. There is a distinction in my mind between multi-winged squads and horde squads. You guys have a specific reason for your DFC wing which is cool and the pigs and 71 are good examples of great squads that are not hordlings.

2 hordes slamming together can be a thing of beauty, too bad it doesn't happen very often.

I agree. The Pigs realized long ago that TT is the night when we have our largest turnout, and we have to have a lot of red guys for that many Pigs to kill. We have around 65 or so members, and about a third of them will show on that night. Nothing funner than a bunch of P40E's, 109's, 190's, Pony's (or whatever the flavor of the week is?) lifting in loose wing towards the biggest dar we can find. Usually end up over staying our welcome and don't get to return, but definitely some of the best squad based dogfights I have had!

As it was my comment that got you curious. I probably would have been better off using the term 'megasquad' as has been used in the past. My point was those squads tend to focus inwards and are less apt to interact with the rest of the players on their side or on the other side.
The complaints about 'not getting to fly with my squad!" in regards the arena caps, tend to come mostly from those folks as well in my opinion anyway.
