Title: Campaign Flyer Fail!
Post by: Nefarious on October 29, 2010, 03:05:13 PM
Somewhere a graphic designer is packing his desk up and heading for the unemployment line...

For most of you I am sure you can tell what uniforms those are. It's just kind of funny that no one noticed until the fliers went out. Just a friendly reminder to do a little research before you have 10,000 copies made!

Please don't make this a political discussion!

sad thing is, 85% of Americans wouldn't catch that.

I don't get it.. ok yeah I get that those are German uniforms and all that, but not until after I clicked on the link.

What I don't get why it is 'sad' that 85% of Americans wouldn't catch that?  I'd be willing to bet it's more like 99%, but still.. as an American I'm obligated to learn all of the different uniform types?  To be honest, it's not really even that clear of a picture.. and the fact that there are so many variations of the American Military uniforms... it's just.. well it's hard to hold it against anyone who wouldn't recognize those as German Soldiers.

And most likely, if this hadn't been published by the news media, it wouldn't have even been that big of a deal in the first place...

Some body has to approve the art work and those approvals, ours do, spell out were not to blame for any mistakes which would include any photos. That means the customer eats the printing and we usually try to cut a small discount on the reprint if it does happen. 10,000 sounds like a lot but not really, the mailing may have cost as much if not more than the printing.

I'd never know it's wehrmacht if CBS didn't fill in the blank.

Agreed that it wouldn't have been a big deal, but what I'm talking about is that most people pay so little attention to what's going on right in front of them that they wouldn't even notice the difference between a picture of the modern US Army and a squad of SS infantry from almost 70 years ago if it wasn't pointed out to them. Including, apparently, whoever designed the ad. It's a lack of what we like to call 'basic attention to detail'.

M-40 helmet is the biggest giveaway, next is the peadot camo

I agree

I don't think this would be a problem for me. As I see it, im sure most to all of the German soldiers trusted each other for their lives. Just because someone has a different outlook on the world, or is from a different country doesn't count out the fact that they are human and still have the belief in comradeship.

Thats Waffen SS gear, the camoflauge and helmets are rather telling. Also some of their webbing is a bit of a giveaway, with the standard Wehrmacht canteens and an SS type 40 entrenching tool. (short version of the German Heer's shovel to double as a melee weapon)

But I agree with Stokes on this one, while some people will find this offensive and confronting as they are Nazi's. It does not take away from the message, more adds a sinister dimension. And again Treize the cavalry man is right in sayin that most Americans (yourselves excepted) would not know a thing outside US history if it bit them in the rear.

It's a campaign add, and those are guys dressed in German uniforms doing the reenactment thing.  The candidate didn't realize this, I guess a soldier is a soldier to him,  he should have done at least a minimum of due diligence.

The fact that we have scores of pictures and clipart of American GIs in service, makes me wonder why the designer/artist chose this photo.

We have Tens of Thousands, if not more... photos of men and women serving in the last 9 years and they chose this...

Shameful.
