Post by: JHerne on October 29, 2010, 09:45:28 PM
Just wondering who's in my neck o' the woods and be interested for a meetup at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh sometime?

4 of us did exactly this back in 01 and we had a blast.

Plus's

Way way shorter than driving from Fargo to AH con in Dallas.
Lots of way cool planes parked to wander around and look at.

Minus's
Way to many people there during the EAA fly in.
Camping is imo over priced for a 15x15 square of dirt that might have a tree for shade.

Were you thinking of doing this during the big EAA fly-in? I only wonder, as accomodations may be an issue.

I've got several friends in the Green Bay/Appleton area that I could stay with, so my only hang-up would be with work/school scheduling.

Nah, wasn't thinking of doing it during the EAA convention, besides, I'm usually tied up that entire week as I have anywhere from 3-8 pilots staying at my house (cheaper than hotels and nicer than sleeping under the wing).

I was thinking an off-season get together, something like that. We typically get together for the Family Flight Fest weekend at the museum, as I'm there displaying my model collection.

I work across the highway from the EAA museum in Oshkosh, B'Gosh!

I live about 40 minutes outside of town.

Well, do we wanna risk something in the wintertime? Since its a group event, we can always reschedule with an email chain if the weather is bad.

The EAA holds their 'Family Flight Fest' in mid-March (always questionable in WI!), and maybe we can set something up for that weekend. I'll be an exhibitor that weekend but we can always spawn-camp my tables, maybe even bring a couple of laptops and monitors for some offline AH.

The event is 2-days, Sat. and Sun., so it would give those who can make one day or the other a chance to get there.

Ya know, even being surrounded by a thousand aircraft, sleeping under a wing gets real old...I've done it a few times. The only good thing about waking up at EAA is stumbling over to get the hot donuts as soon as they come out of the fryer.

We've sorta developed a system, since I live 60min. away...I have buddies from the east coast who fly in for the show, drop their aircraft at EAA, then we plane-pool back and forth between my house and the show. Clean sheets, showers, sleeping in a bed instead of the ground, all good. Its a good trade - they all stay at my place, I get to fly into EAA instead of driving and dealing with all the spectators.

Could you just be getting  :old:   ?

 :D

Besides, When I'm finished with this baby  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrows_Bearhawk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrows_Bearhawk)  I'll just throw a mattress in the back and be done with it .  I don't always HAVE to leave the rear seats in it :rofl

Kinda looks like an all-terrain Citabria!  :airplane:

You're building one now? How far along are you?

It's a pretty stout a/c, for sure  :aok

How far along?  Not very  :cry

I've been busy since the Smithy arrived...

I've been making a lot of tooling to shave time off of the actual build such as flanging dies, form blocks, etc but the last month I have been mostly making stuff for my Wrangler    :devil

Soon, it will be too cold to do any serious wheeling that doesn't involve ice, so I will have to fight the urge to make improvements on the brewery and get crackin' on the plane again (or clone myself).

I've got 2 rolls of 2024-T3 (.025 and .032) and all of the wing steel, but there is just no way I'm going to be flanging the lightening holes on all 170 wing ribs by hand, nor bend the wing steel by hand.  I'm almost finished making my press brake and after that, I'll be making a fishmouth jig for notching the tubing.   I was a tool & die maker in a former life and can't imagine NOT having tools to form the parts.  I know some guys do it ALL by hand, but I do not have that kind of patience.  I want speed and repeatability.  (that way I can have the wife and kids help and still get good parts :P  )

I haven't updated the log for a while, either.      http://www.mykitlog.com/VonMessa (http://www.mykitlog.com/VonMessa)

It's amazing the projects that can distract you, once you have a lathe in the basement.    :rofl

I was supposed to go to the EAA weekend with one of the guys in my chapter, but the field was a swamp and he drove, instead.  I don't travel well in a car for that long with someone else driving  :uhoh

I hear ya, this year was brutal. Was ok if you thought to bring hip-waders. It dried out later in the week, but when I got there on Tues morning the North 40 was basically underwater. Last year there were easily 300-400 spam cans in that area alone.

This year they were parking aircraft anywhere they could. Definitely put a damper on the event.
