332nd Flying Mongrels were slotted for escorting JV44 and JG27 for a strike against the task group in 19.15.  My guys were divided in to N1K2's and Ki-61's. Fuel was going to be an issue so we had concerns about that.

Shortly before the frame started Assi asked me if I could put some guys in bombers since the attack groups were a low turn out. I pulled three of my guys and put them in the Ki-67. Lost JG27 and tried to contact them on country, but did not see a reply. My Ki-61 flight spotted the task group and we moved in. Seafires spotted us about the time we spotted the fleet. Lost a few bombers, but 'Drone' managed to get some hits on the CV. Not sure how successful everyone else was. I never managed to hit any ships. Each time I would work my way back over the fleet I was having to man my guns and fight off fighters. The 3rd try proved fatal for me. :) Saw JG27 on the deck about the time of my demise. Maybe they had some luck with torpedoes.

Filth, I really wish you had waited about 10 more seconds before you kindly unloaded some of your 20mm's in me. Would have loved credit for that second kill  :lol

That was a fun one  :salute

The funny thing is I was aiming at the guy who was about to light up Kermit, and while firing at him, the other nik flew thru my stream. Not sure which was you. :)

Thank you sir, well planned, and as far as I could tell, executed, it was fun and an honor for us to be a part of it.

Well to answer your question about what happened to II/JG27 is good news bad news.

After take off we headed due east NOE.  Our idea was to take a different rout in order to improve our chances of making it in unobserved. We stayed about 50 miles north of the objective the then turned due south. This gave the other bombers that were climbing for alt time to get to the target and for us to arrive at close to the same time.

Well it looked real good for a while.  We first noticed high fighters and some buffs of our attack force being engaged. It looked real good untill the fighters noticed us.  We managed to get in and drop our torpedo's but we lost 2 formations.  Zman managed to get out and made it home.

Our results from last night are as follows:

Wagger:   Kia

Saltee:     Kia/2 gun batteries, 2 field guns and 1 ship destroyed

Zman:     Shot down 2 Seafires and returned safely to base.

We had a great time and look forward to doing it again.  Salute to all who participated.

Wagger you guys had us in the CAP groups sweating it out as well. VF-17 was a little northwest of the CV executing a nice figure 8 pattern around 25k when contact reports started coming in south of us. So we pointed our noses at the CV group and thought we would arrive just a little after the bombers were engaged...however we were a little behind the high group but arrived on station just in time for you low guys to get into view so we went after you with some others. We ended up getting 9 kills and 7 assists with our 7 pilots in VF-17. We also accounted for you and Saltee doing down and even though we gave chase we could not catch up with Zman who must have been balls to the wall getting outta dodge.

Well Saltee and Zman are both ex swabbies.  Unfortunately Saltee fell in with the ground pounder and suffered the consequences.  Zman kept his sea legs and just walked on water all the way home.

The battle over airbase A31 was intense!

The attackers: ten sets of Lancasters, ten sets of B-24s, twenty-two P-38s.

The defenders: twenty-nine Ki-84s, N1K1s, and A6M5s.

The Allied bombers suffered about 56% losses (34 planes).  Four P-38s were shot down.  The IJN/IJA lost seventeen planes and sixteen pilots.  Six hangars and six minor targets were destroyed at the base.

A hard-fought battle, indeed!   :salute

Wish I could have watched more of the action. Thats the trouble with SEA setups like real war you only see your tiny part of it.

...I wanted to add its good to see the trading of  respectfull :salute from the two worthy adversaries. FSO is a community too after all.  :aok
