     Interesting trivia about that experiment, the F-84s were supposed to hook wingtips with
the B-29 to extend range.  Unfortunately the wingtip vortices made the hookup very dangerous
even in good weather.  In addition, they also almost caused the fighters to flip over onto the wings
of the bomber..OUCH!  :D

     Interesting trivia about that experiment, the F-84s were supposed to hook wingtips with
the B-29 to extend range.  Unfortunately the wingtip vortices made the hookup very dangerous
even in good weather.  In addition, they also almost caused the fighters to flip over onto the wings
of the bomber..OUCH!  :D

Bud Anderson flew many of those test flights and talks about them quite a bit in his book.  While testing autopilot systems in the F-84's Anderson would couple up with the B-29 he would lose electrical power, finally they decided that the other pilot/plane would attempt to couple up and try the autopilot system.  As soon as he switched it on the plane pitched up and smashed into the B-29's wings both the fighter and the B-29 crashed killing both crews, 6 people total.
