So its getting to be that time that my kids are getting older, hence there xmas presents are getting more techi.
Were getting them ipod touches for xmas, and i have a couple of questions.
Will i need to buy an internet service package for them? I know they will work off the wifi in my house, but when they are say out of the house, down at the park etc, would they need to have an internet service to get internet?
Also, Id like to have some type of parental control over where they can "visit" on the web. (theyre 10yr old boy and girl twins)
Thanks in advance

The internet part, unless it is WIFI un-secured network they can't get online anywhere but at home.
With the parental thing, Go into settings and then look around in the Internet Options and it should let you block and un-block certain things.

Is there an internet option to make it so they can get internet anywhere? Ie like cell phones, and droids have? :salute

Not that i know of. I dont believe there is any type of antenna inside like the iphones/droids have.
I have one. the only place your gonna get internet, is your house (if you have wifi) or if your at taco bell, Starbucks, places that have an public wifi.

WiFi only works in certain places, but I'm sure you already knew that. Same thing works with the itouch, WiFi only works if their is WiFi in the area, and hope you don't news a password for it. There is nothing you can do about having internet all the time bc its not a phone.
And also, you don't need an internet service for it to work, all you need is itunes just so you can get them started. Don't even need to go to the itunes store, but suggested if you don't already have it.
Just curious, what size are you getting them. 32 is probably too much bc I have a 64 and I have no clue what to do with all the space lol

Not sure what size, but i really think they wont need anything over the 8 or 16 gb. The generation 4....8gb ones are fairly reasonabley priced ( $225ish ) and im thinking might be a good starter for them. They hold something like 2000 songs and a lot of hrs of video. ( I dont honestly think i even know 2000 songs :lol )I know in 2 or 3 years im going to get them (droid ) type phones anyway ( Im fortunate that they are extremely responsible kids.)
Do they have game apps and such? Are the Iphones something that a 10yrold could have a good time with? I know thats an open ended question, folks here not knowing them and all, but they really seem to want them.
Thanks Bosco, hope ur well sir :salute

I've got a 8gb 1st Gen ipod touch and it's perfect for what I use it for. Holds all my songs and I've got a boatload of apps on it.

I own both Ipod touch and Ipad.
If this is for 10 year olds to use at home (not take to school) I'd suggest you get them the Ipad. I say this because its much harder for them to break the ipad (whereas an ipod is easily thrown across the room in a fit), its the exact same device for all purposes and most importantly, the ipad will let them work on a computer-like device... gives them practice in using tablet-type touchscreen systems which will no doubt be the standard computer when they're older.
Both play the same mp3's use the same itunes interface, both play videos, etc. Ipad basic is a bit pricier than an ipod but its much more capable and its battery lasts a lot longer.
"Will i need to buy an internet service package for them?"
Not mandatory. The ipod/ipad will use any wi-fi you may have set at home by default. If the device has 3G or 4G enabled then yes, you'll need to sign up for a data plan which if im not mistaken runs at $30 a month with a 2gb limit (which imo is really stupid). You can also as an alternative get a wifi-3g card from Virgin Mobile.. its a credit card sized 3g device that emits the internet in wi-fi from itself. Very nifty to have and its super cheap and has unlimited data.
"I know they will work off the wifi in my house, but when they are say out of the house, down at the park etc, would they need to have an internet service to get internet?"
Just like a wifi laptop man. If you dont have wifi access don the road or park you need to pay for it.

That's a good question... I looked it up and the ipad/ipod dont have native parental controls... not like in a computer where you have a program that can automatically block tens of thousands of websites. The only thing close to it is a manual 'block website' option which I doubt will be of any use as a parental control method.
There are apps you can download for that.. though its sort of self-defeating since you need to run the app manually for it to work.
In any case, 10yr+ olds in this day and age have already seen more porn that you did before you were 18.
You could also look into an alternative for both the ipod/ipad... I believe samsung released their Galaxy tablet thats a 7 inch screen, multitouch that runs windows 7... that will definetely run everything the ipod/ipad will and more plus give you parental control. :)

This thread reminded me of me needing to replace the iTouch i got stolen last summer. Need the 32 gig one now, don't have room for my ~8 days worth of songs...

Get an iPad instead and a 3G sim card for internet connection outside wi-fi.
The iPad was an instant hit with my 7-year old and she's playing with it every day. Apple parental controls you already on apps and on internet you have a hard time finding any porn that doesn't run on flash (iPad/iPod doesn't run flash). Not saying it's impossible  but if your kids are smart enough to find it then you're hard pushed to stop them in any case.

Wow...I was lucky to have a tracfone at age 14.

Iphone or ipod touch are both ok, I have both. I went from the touch to phone because I wanted 'anywhere internet'
However, do not ever buy the Ipad, it is overpriced, overhyped and highly overrated. Its only an Ipod touch for people with fat fingers who buy any old piece of crap because it is supposedly cool.

This may be overkill but if you want robust parental control/supervision, check these out :aok

ewww cisco. and barracuda LOL. Probably the two worst security solutions out there :) - perrine I suggest you have a look at the Sonicwall TZ-100 and TZ-200, great little home filtering solutions that make the stuff above look primitive and limited in capability.
mbailey make sure you check out Android. There's a lot of good stuff happening in the 7" arena, we have a touch at home, a 5.5 and 1.8 year old, they've gone off the touch for the 7" android tablet (which cost me about us$220)
