Ok I am curious because to me that is more fishing that hunting...yeah I know semantics but you gotta explain how that is hunting. I am not trying to start something I just want to know.
For me hunting is not sitting in a stand waiting on a deer to walk by that is called waiting to shoot...IMO. Hunting is when you ACTIVELY engage the animal that you intend to kill, whether by stalking, scouting, etc... to locate and kill. That is how I hunt Turkeys, Deer, wild hog, squirrels, quail or rabbits. However when I go duck, dove or goose...SHOOTING...I tend to stay in one spot and toss out enough decoys or prepare the area with enough food to have drawn them in ahead of time that it makes life so much easier and less of an activity and more of a social gathering for shooting.
-
What do you hunt with?
Spears?
:rofl sometimes yep :D
other times we would use an airgun or even a home made crossbow (we made one out of an old leaf spring suspension arm recently, it penetrates through sheet steel on a good shot...)
-
I hunt for that last beer in the bottom of the fridge.

I would think what he does is the same, accept he needs a boat, to stalk, scout etc....to locate the whale, and his hunting area is an entire bay or ocean, the boat is just the means of the stalk, just like walking is to land hunting.
I wouldnt think that he would just sit in the boat, waiting for something to swim by.
(not disagreeing with you, just sayin that im sure its not as "easy" as say sitting in a deer stand waiting for something to walk by. )
Greens, id be curious, how exactly is it done?
-
If ya google earth my village <ELIM, AK> and look at my surroundings, we have ocean in front of us. so we hunt land and sea animals mammals. I have a 18ft lund boat w a yamaha high thrust 50 outboard motor. I the driver n my crew of 2 we takeoff in the ocean n boat around looking for the beluga surfacing. once we spot them we chase them, they come up anywhere from 30yds to 100yds away from us in the boat. most of the time we have to have a luck shot n hit them then they slow down alittle then we shoot em again then when they get real slow swimming we get up close to them then harpoon em w a rebar homemade harpoon <spear>. after they are harpooned they givevup on life n say kill me ya dirty bastard. then we cut under their jaw n tie a tow rope thru the jaw n drag the beluga to either shore or on a chunk of ice then butcher it :aok

Open invitation for you IF you ever get down to Alabama my friend! Plenty of whitetail around my parents and grand parents land and they aren't small bodied like most of those Texas deer you see on TV. Kinda close to the same size that you get up in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin...since that is where most of the deer in the Southeastern US came from back after the depression and people dang near hunted them to extinction down here to survive.

Hell, it's a common occurrence to bad a 200 lb, 8-point around here.
In fact, they are having a big hunt @ Valley Forge this year. Bringing in sharpshooters to thin them out as they are wayyy overpopulated right now.

Sounds like you need some hunters from Alabama to come up and kill for free for a good long deer season.

That blubber n skin im holding we eat the whole thing except the bones n intestines stomach etc. we eat the skin we call it muktuk n the blubber is parta the muktuk. its very good pickled. we can eat it raw or cooked. if ya look hard in the 1st pic u can see pretty much the beluga is stripped of all its skin n meat.
to you whitetail hunters, youd love to hunt caribou here. We have to go anywhere from 20-120miles for caribou, depends on the time of the year. winter time is easier to hunt caribou.
and to machfly no we dont use it for insulation we eat it. we use caribou n seal n bear skins for insulation if needed. hell we live in same kinda houses as other people. but no tall buildings or skyscrapers. I have never seen a eskimo living in a igloo before in my lifetime. just for emergency shelter.

Just thought I would share a few pictures of our latest weapon of mass destruction. It is a crossbow made from a leaf spring suspension arm from an old vehical. It has been angle grinded to shape and strength we desired. The metal is some form of treated steel.
Accuracy hold well past 20 yards with little to no drop. Max range is untested as yet but somewhere in the region of 200 yards when fired at 45 degrees, or maybe more. Penetration at 20yards is very fatal. We need pliers to get the tip out of wood and it will punch through sheet steel like butter. The ugly bastard holding it is yours truly.
image link: http://www.freeroleentertainment.com/Xbow.JPG
(NOTE: That is one big image not seperate little ones. Click the above link or save the image to desktop to see the full size pics with captions)
The whole thing is home made. We used a welding tourch, angle grinder and a handsaw along with screwdrivers and a little carving knife. My friend Robert from the czech republic is responsible for the idea and the excelent craftmanship of the trigger mechanism and other fixings. The trigger works beautifully, with minimal pressure required to fire. Cocking the bow is not easy. Some of us can do it against our chest happily, but for those who are a little weaker in the arms there is a loop to put your foot through on the front to aid cocking. The metal brace above the trigger is to hold the bolt in place when shooting upwards or downwards. It also ensures the cord contacts the bolt squarely everytime.
Thought some might enjoy seeing what us poor folk who can't have guns get up to in our spare time. I will try to get a video of shooting it if anyone is interested. It is brand new, and as yet has not killed anything at all.

Australian Hobby Falcon
love falcons, too bad Falconry is illegal in Australia, USA here I come!
Bummer about the Australian restrictions... American falconry is highly regulated, but the envy of many countries world-wide from what I hear.
I just got home from two weeks of falconry meets in Kansas. A week of eagle falconry, followed by a week at the North American meet. It was a blast. I took my redtail and was successful hunting jackrabbits with her, which was very challenging but very fun.
I hunt with firearms too, but have mainly transitioned over to birds now. I still enjoy hunting with firearms or archery equipment, I just don't have much time for it. I'm lucky to get out for more than 15-20 days/year, because I have my birds out 3-5 times/week.
-
However when I go duck, dove or goose...SHOOTING...I tend to stay in one spot and toss out enough decoys or prepare the area with enough food to have drawn them in ahead of time that it makes life so much easier and less of an activity and more of a social gathering for shooting.
"Preparing an area with food" is considered baiting. Migratory birds are illegal to hunt over bait (federal law), and the area is considered baited for 10 days following the complete removal of the bait.
Just an FYI...

I took my redtail and was successful hunting jackrabbits with her
I bet shes a beauty, we have an extremely large population of Redtails in my area ( Eastern PA ) Absolutley magnificent creatures. In all honesty i believe that evolution has made them into the perfect predator.
I have one that comes around all the time, (we have practically named her at this point shes here so much), she has a favorite tree in my back yard that overlooks my cornfields and some hedgerows, and let me tell you, to say that she has perfected her hunting skills would be a vast understatement.
Id love to see a pic of yours

"Preparing an area with food" is considered baiting. Migratory birds are illegal to hunt over bait (federal law), and the area is considered baited for 10 days following the complete removal of the bait.
Just an FYI...
somebody near where I live was recently busted shooting geese off a baitpile. big no-no. he lost his shotgun, his dog, and his truck, not to mention his hunting privileges for a few years. don't bait ducks and geese :aok

When I was in my teens I used to hunt duck and deer. Then in my twenties I went to work for a bail bond company. Needless to say hunting scumbag people was a lot more satisfying.......and profitable. :t

YES....Most have no Idea....They are decimating the Elk herds......Go to that link I put in my Post. They pray on the Cow Elk, eat the Baby out of the pregent Mom Mostly leaving her for dead and untouched. They Sport kill apx 2-3 Elk per month Per Wolf..on top of the ones they kill for Food.. tons of GOOD info and Many Hunters up here will shoot one and NEVER talk about it..Its getting Out of control..
