Title: Is this guy for real??
Post by: Shuffler on November 18, 2010, 11:09:55 AM
I imagine that most of you saw the youtube video of the middle school football game where a trick play made for a touchdown. Well this fella is all tears about the whole thing.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/frank_deford/11/17/driscoll.middle.school/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=Sbin (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/frank_deford/11/17/driscoll.middle.school/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=Sbin)

IMHO he is an idiot. Folks like him do not want kids to learn a lesson in anything but handouts.

I saw that vid of the guy walking through the defence. That was an awesome front to pull it off. He looked so cool and calm till he starts running.
How could anyone complain? Jealousy?

That writer is a clueless crybaby.  Actually, he kind of reminds me of people who use the term "gaming the game" in this universe.  lol!

"No, it was only the other team's kids who were embarrassed and belittled by a children's coach being a wise guy, a bully of sorts. It wasn't genius at all. Sure, it was legal, but it wasn't fair. Laugh at kids being outslicked by a grown-up, and you're cruel. That isn't sport."

Kind of like some people "gaming the game" to get a better ranking?

Oh booooo waaaaaaa

If the other coach didn't teach his kids not to fall for stupid things like that then shame on him.

As for legal...I believe the NFHS rule for football states that a play must begin with the center handing (snapping) the ball to the person receiving it through their legs and can not pass the ball around the legs or body. I don't have my copy of the official rules handy but I think the NCAA rules are the same in that regard. AFAIK...however I think only two states in the US do not use the NFHS rules for football and I think those are Texas and Massachusetts...could be wrong.

I agree with the article writer.  That wasn't football, it was a coach tricking some kids.  Shame on the other coach, high school football isn't about winning at all costs, especially when the cost is trying to humiliate and trick a bunch of kids by finding a loophole in the rules that doesn't involve an actual "play" that has anything to do with playing football.

I'd hope that the league has some way to punish the coach for that play.  Not cool at all, and the kids who showed up to play football are the ones who suffered just so one coach could look cool tricking some kids.  Jerk.

You're right, far better that the kids learn that in a team sport, it's a good idea to try to bend the rules instead of actually playing the game everyone showed up to play.  Even better, the coaches need to try to out-do each other with tricks like that instead of actually teaching their teams how to play, since the point isn't about playing the game anymore.

May as well start slashing bus tires so the visiting team defaults when they can't get to the game.  Same non-game tactic, same result, same lesson taught to the players, most of whom just want to play ball.

Don't like the illegality of slashing tires?  Then just pop the hood and disconnect the battery under the motor where it attaches to the block.  Hard to troubleshoot and repair in time, and no real damage done, haha it's just a joke see how cool I am!  Jerks.

It was a single play!  :lol It's not like they ran that play every down of that game.  Football should totally outlaw 'jukes' as well, because that is nothing but faking out the other team!  :furious  Also, fake punts, totally irresponsible.  Teams should exchange play books before the game for true fairness.

I can guarantee those kids all learned a lesson about football that day, and neither team will allow that to happen again.

Every season I played high school football in, one school would try at least one trick play, my school would usually do the "sleeper".

Well, you should call everyone of your opponents tonight and tell them how sorry you are for ruining their life.

No rules were bent. It even says so in the artical. Football is not just a physical sport, it is also mental. The other team just was not trained to act on the ball.

I have more issue with folks that hate to see kids not awarded for thought and initiative. They prefer  to keep everyone at the weakest links level so he won't feel bad about being lazy. :)

I think that it was the coach outslicking the kids.  Now, if it were the kids who came up the play, I give them a :aok
