EVERETT, Wash. - Boeing Co. is hiring more machinists as it starts ramping up commercial jet production.
The Daily Herald of Everett reported Thursday that Boeing has added nearly 1,000 production workers in the past eight weeks, including about 193 it plans to hire Friday. Based on information from the Machinists union, that would be the highest number of new machinists hired by Boeing in a single week since 2005, the newspaper said.
Boeing, which releases employment figures at the end of each month, said that at the end of October it had 72,782 employees in Washington state, a gain of 618 since the first of the year. Its Commercial Airplanes division, most of which is based in Washington, 2,388 jobs have been added to total 62,622.
That number doesn't include about 500 recently hired machinists, the Herald said. Boeing's worldwide employment this year has stayed stable at around 160,000 workers.
"We've announced rate increases and have to have people on board to be able to meet our goals," said Boeing spokesman Tim Healy.
After slowing some production lines because of the recession, Boeing announced it would speed up its 737, 777 and 747 programs next year.
It also plans to increase production of its long-delayed 787 jetliner. Boeing had planned to deliver the first 787 to a customer in early 2011, but that schedule has been in question since the company grounded its 787 test fleet after an electrical fire forced an emergency landing of one of the planes last week.
Boeing usually slows its hiring pace in the last few months of the year as the holidays and its annual plant shutdowns approach. In November 2009 and 2008, it hired 73 and 48 machinists respectively, The Herald said. This year it will have added about 490 machinists, including those on Friday.
Employment for Boeing's engineers and professional workers has remained relatively stable over the past few years, said Bill Dugovich, spokesman for the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace.

Good to know Rip. I have a few buddies up in the Carolinas that are looking for work now and are machinists. IF they don't know about this I will certainly point them in that direction.

I'll look into this in detail this weekend. Off the top of your head, do you know if you're hiring any CADD drafters (or someone willing to do any other job they train them for) on the West Coast? I'd love to work for boeing, especially anything involved with the F/A-18.

Thats great..Its too bad you're 10 years late and they have pay millions out in penelties. Ofcourse by you I really mean Boeing. Our Boeing stock has been in the tank for years. Hopefully it'll go back up soon. I used to work on the Delta 2 and 4 heavy lift launch vehichles at the Hunington Beach CA campus.

Beoing must be hiring here in LA too. I work across the street from Beoing and there's been a line around the block of people looking like they're waiting for an interview.

2.5 years late, and if you're the least bit educated in R&D of new aircraft, new materials and understand the global aerospace industry in this day and age, this is the standard nowadays. I could continue the conversation of "why" but it'd be over your head.

They will be hiring in every sector if they're hiring union workers.
I personally have stayed away from the military side of the house since hiring into the company in 1979 due to the fragility of defense work contracts. YMMV.

Uhhh, I hate to burst bubbles, but being a machinist for Boeing doesn't necessarily mean your a machinist.
You could be a just a riveter.
I do machine parts for Boeing, outside contractor, and they have gotten rid of a good share of their own in house stuff, however, due to the 787 debacle, some is coming back in house.
The Machinist side of things is assembly, SPEEA are the engineers, which are due for their 4 yr strike cycle.
I do believe, and I may be wrong, that particular ad was centered around the several orders for 767's they just recieved. That is built in Everett and Renton.

You might get people from Hawker Beach craft in Wichita, kansas applying. The whole plant (including HQ) might be packing up and leaving for Louisiana.

No 767 in Renton. Its a wide body A/C, so it's in Everett. The airfield in Renton is too short for wide body A/C.
The only reason they're holding the 767 line open is in hopes of landing the tanker bid...otherwise the 787 replaces the 767.
