$5 whole dollars a week? When I was your age I had a little push mower that I went around the neighborhood with mowing lawns every week for $20 each. Why now try that or something similar?

I made $50 a week when i was 13. Helping my uncle build houses after school and summer time. (more like, hey boy!! get out of the damn mud and get some 2 x 4s)

My parents wouldn't allow me to have any games like that. Grew up in a "military style" home. (father was chief of police) Had to keep my hair short, finger nails were inspected once a week to make sure they were short enough. Had to work for what I WANTED. Not for what i needed. I wanted a new toy. I had to go work for it.

Too bad there aren't that many motivated young men around me. I'd cheerfully pony up subscription + 30 a month for yardwork.
Fortunately I've got Squid and his friends (aka weekend slaves :devil)

i used to do lawn cutting, car washing, sweeping sidewalks, in the winter, i'd drag my grandpop's snow blower, and a shovel(even though i hate the cold, it was money)

like 2 years ago i learned how to stop this from happening 1. GO TO BED meant GO TO BED NOW!! 2. don't do stupid stuff like 'playing in your dads convertible and move the shifter thus rolling into the street' (true story) i had to lay on my bed and he whipped the crap out of me, i still think its kind of a funny story well other then the last

Sounds like you have a good dad, just do what he says for that 5 bucks/week. Just remind him there's 4.3 weeks/per month (on average) so that comes out to $21.fiffy/month. :)

That and property owners are worried about getting sued if something happens. Hiring someone under the age of sixteen opens up a legal minefield, and hiring someone under the age of eighteen to operate hazardous machinery(lawn mower) is a crime. We don't even have paperboys anymore because the papers are afraid of litigation.

Same here started working at 12 years old landscaping that was in 72, Dad didnt make enough with the RailRoad strike on with the strike pay so anything we wanted besides the basics we earned the money for it, as a 18th birthday present i went and bought a new car off the showroom cash and my parents were so proud of me, week later i moved out, the rest is still unwritten

Just a thought, keep an ear open at your school. Before I left for college, I worked cleaning classrooms at a local elementary school. Work was the easiest thing I've ever done (No scrubbing, no touching anything wet or nasty because it's a health risk, etc.) and it paid about $500 a month.
