Title: Direct X 8.1 boosted my frame rate by almost 100% :)))
Post by: beet1e on December 12, 2001, 05:24:00 AM
Gentlemen,

As a fledgling AH pilot, I am still configuring my system to optimise its performance for Aces High.  I had been running with a resolution of 1024x768 and getting a frame rate of around 50fps. My video card is a relatively advanced one – nvidia GeForce 2 Ultra 64MB – so I thought I would up the resolution in AH to 1280x1024. Of course the graphics became much clearer. In particular, the instruments are much clearer, and I can actually read the ammo counters without having to zoom in.

On the minus side, frame rate went down to 35fps. I checked the Aces High HELP app. with a view to improving this. The only thing I could see that I had not already done was to upgrade from DX 8 to DX 8.1. I did this, and wow! Frame rate has shot up to 68fps.  :) Video card memory usage has gone up from about 15MB to 24MB, so that means I’ve still got 40MB to spare.

If anyone else needs a frame rate boost, consider getting DX 8.1 if you haven’t already.

Note – I have two HDDs in my system, with W98SE on one and W2000 Pro on the other. I use the W98SE system for running games like AH. I have not yet succumbed to XP (have been warned off – lol)

Wow! Let me get this straight...you were at Direct-X 8.0a(35fps) and went to Direct-X 8.1(68fps)?

Were U at the same spot each time you tested the FR?  If so, where were U and what were U in?

AK,

The frame rate figures I gave are what I settle at in any plane. They are not constant but vary either way by about 6fps. I'm getting 70fps now, by which I mean that the frame rate is typically around 70, but can dip to 65 but has peaked at 78.  Just depends what's on the screen at the time.

One thing that makes the FR nose dive is using Alt+S to take a screen shot!  That causes a temporary dip to about 3fps.

Settings to measure AH fps:
click offline and rate fps from tower while showing clipboard.

Installed Dx8.1 and the results were as follows:

Dx8.0a: 45fps
Dx8.1: 65fps

Impressive!!!

Still no compatibility issues ...

zxmav your problem is your CPU, net code eats up the little resources it has and thats why your framerate drops online.

I ran into a funny frame rate issue while running a duel boot setup as well.  I installed ah on both a win2000 pro and win98 partition.  Seems that that after running ah on the win 2k partition, when i rebooted and tried to play on the win98 partition my frame rates were terrible.  I reinstalled ah on the win98 partition and the fr came back up to normal.  Not sure why, but thats my story  :)
