What are the most important things for you when choosing a plane/GV for AH2?
some of the choices (feel free to add your own):
-Performance (maneuvers, speed, guns, ect.)
-Availability (CV based, bombs, rockets, fuel, ect.)
-History (What the plane did)
-Looks
-ENY/Perk value
-Name
-Sound
-
Whether I enjoy flying it or not.

Generally I try to pick one that has one or more obvious handicaps. No matter what I fly I'm bound to get shot down, makes it more fun and slightly less embarrassing if that happens while I'm trying to overcome my machine's drawback(s). After doing this for awhile it feels uncomfortable getting into one of the late war monsters.

Is it a P-38?
Does it have ENY over 15?
Is it really not a P-38?
Does it have guns?
Are you sure it's not a P-38?
That's been about the extent of my choosing.
-
1. is it russian?
2. does it have bad guns?
3.does it have a nasty stall?
4.can it dogfight?
5. is its nickname Lgay?
if all of the above is the case, then thats why I fly it :)

Without a doubt I fly the planes that I find historically interesting. When I came to AH I was fresh off of reading the biographies of Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson and I wanted to fly the P-51 and recreate those stories. After a few years of that I took Mathman's advice and bought a couple books on the carrier war in the Pacific and became a F6F dweeb for the next several years. Currently my history obsession is the 5th Air Force and the war in New Guinea in 1942 and 1943 and I'm pretty much flying the P-38G with occasional hops in the P-39D and P-40E. During the last plane poll I was really pulling for either the Beaufighter or the Ki-43 to win despite the odds, I'm also really excited to see the G4M1 coming soon.

My favorites/best match of capabilities for the job at hand.
High alt fighter-Spit 8 or Spit 14

I could go on for a while, but you get the picture....

It has to have my name on it so I can find it in the hanger

Lucky for me since I only fly one plane I don't have to bother with this nonsense of looking for a reason to fly the plane I choose.

fOR fIGHERS
well I love the 38, and 109's but I always come back to the F4u-1a because I end up thinking, if I'm in a 38 I am the first one jumped every time, also if I'm flying a 38 or 109 I'm always on the lookout for a F4u. Its not the best at much but its good at a lot. I fly the plane that I know, if I come to a 1 vs 1 fight, I'm confident I can handle most other planes. For me thats the F4U-1a for another pilot it may be the 51, or 38, or even a 202.
FOR ATTACK
I fly the f4u-1d or the p47, large payload and still can put up a nice fight when I'm empty. if i'm going for just ack I'll take a 190d, gets me their fast and can take a beating.

+1, although I do frequently find myself in the latewar monster that is the 47-M because quite frankly that bird makes me happy. Otherwise, I switch it up among a lot of the MW birds in LW.

It has to be gorgeous.
-
good views, good roll ate, good acceleration and a cannon - at least one.

My favorite planes in the game are my favorite planes in RL. Thus why I love the Corsair and Wildcat.
If only the people in the EWA actually FOUGHT rather than milk-running bases, I'd spend more time online with the Little Grumman.

Any plane with inverted gullwings.
HONK!
Gooss

I just look for the meatball on the wings. If it has them, I'm good :rock
-
The moment I flew a Jug in AH I fell in love with it, I liked it's speed and it's ability to take hits and still get home. :airplane:
-
Does it have wings still? Does it have spinney bits that make it go? Do the spinney bits still spin?

:rofl I saw the topic, then saw Karnak had posted last so I jumped in here, expecting to find his usual well-reasoned and eloquent post and practically blew a mouthful of food at the screen when I read this.

It always depends on what the enemy is doing at the time. If they are high and cherry picking, or if it's a furball. If you up from the base next to the one being attack, you want a fast plane so you can climb and then dive in on them at high speeds. If it's a furball, you need a plane that can turn at low speeds.
-
Whatever I look best in, while dieing, is the plane I fly. :)

Any aircraft that turns into a flaming funeral pyre is ok in my book! :rock

I fly the K4 because once you get going with the 30mm its the shiznit.
I fly the KI84 because it is flat out the shiznit.
I fly the Mossie because when I own a Spit 16 in it I feel like the shiznit.
I fly the 190F8 because it has more rockets then the shiznit.
I fly B24s because I can kill off attackers with the M2s of shiznit.
I fly the F6F becuase its the pwn of CV shiznit.
I drive the Panzer because I get perks like shiznit.
I fly the C47 because it drops troops like shiznit.
I drive M3s because they drop supps and troops like shiznit.

It has to have a cup holder, ashtray, minifridge and is it comfortable to fly nekid. <--that's why I don't fly WWI, the wicker seats are too painful....
-
It has to have gobs of ammo
It has to have a spare engine
It must be good digpile bait

My plane's gotta turn. Favorite is the Zero and Spit IX. Used to fly the Hurri a lot before switching to Zeke. Occasionally fly some of the American planes but just can't get used to the lack of handling. Reminds me of the old muscle cars from the 60's and early 70's. Big and heavy with lots of horse power but could only go in one direction, straight. Give me a turn fighter any day.

I dare you to turn-fight that Spit vs. an F4F or FM-2.

Speed...I don't do the speed thing well so I choose the slower type of planes
my staple is the Ki61. I take up the P40E on occasion also. I do occasionally fly some of the others but once I get into those faster planes things don't happen so well :lol :lol
for base defense...when things are really bad(as in well capped/extreme numbers) spitV and as of last tour the LA7.
-
I treat all planes as chess pieces and pick a plane that matches the situation well. To do this I look at the map and see what would be affective given what flight options available. For instances, if going to an enemy base pick a plane that is more rugged (ACK survivable) and has better than average speed. Example: FW190F or P-47x
This can change if we have air superiority over a base of course. There might be an N1k vulchfest in place. :O
Another for instance might be in going against a horde, long engagements will probably get you picked. So I pick a plane to match the tactics to survive the situation. Boom and Zoom = survive in this situation many times. Perhaps a P-51 or 190d
Other times I fly just for pure fun. To me the funnest thing is shooting down perky planes in average planes. :)

dont underestimate the American Iron's turn rates. F6F turns quite nicely. P51s turn VERY nicely at any speed over 250 and somewhat nicely in speeds below that :aok

The plane must be powered by a piston engine and it cannot suffer from torque.
-
good views, good roll ate, good acceleration and a cannon - at least one.
 I like the at least one cannon part
-
It's ability to remain stable when getting shot at on the runway.
-
It has to be an American plane for me first of all. I perfer the 51 as it is IMO the best all around plane in the game. It has great range so fuel concerns are usually not a problem. It carries enough ord to take out any hanger in the game. It has the speed to dictate most fights. The visibility from the pilots seat is 2nd to none. Six wing mounted .50 cals with plenty of ammo. The best selection of skins in the game. It's a beautiful aircraft and the sound of the air whistling through the intake makes the hair on my neck stand on end. It's easy to fly, outstanding in a dive and it has the ability to use a notch of flaps at high speeds.
