Title: Weird Problem
Post by: Rocket on January 30, 2001, 04:59:00 PM
Is anyone else seeing this?
I have the following equip.

Asus a7v via133 mobo
Pc133 256mb ram
800mhz AMD T-bird
Asus V7700 Deluxe Geforce2 GTS DDR 32mb mem
SBLive Xgamer
Toshiba Dvd
Plextor CD-rw
Aopen 56k external modem
IBM 42gb HDD

When I first start the computer and fire up AH everything is perfect.  I get about 52fps 1600x1280 32bit normal flight.  I can play for hours like this.
The problem starts when either:
1. I start computer(reboot) and it sits for any length of time more than 20 mins without playing AH my frame rates dies to like 20fps in normal flight and 12 in the tower.
2. I exit AH and come back in a few minutes later I have the same problem.
3. I play any other game and come back to AH it slows down.

It seems to affect all of my games this way but AH has the nice FPS counter to show the actual frame loss.  I have noticed that since the addition of graphics memory usage that none of the numbers change there no matter what my fps is.
I had to install dx8 to play Mechwarrior4 and have noticed it since, but it is strange that I can run in 2d mode for an hour and then pop in and have no frame rates.

Make sure your offline terrain is the same as the online, I get huge FPS loss if I don't have this done.

Rocket, I have basically the same system as you, except I'm using a v770 ultra.  I don't have this problem.

It sounds to me like a memory leak.  Are you running Windows ME?  If so, disable system restore.  Fastfind and office '97 perhaps?

Win98 non SE, and I ALWAYS shut off fastfind ;p
I have thought it is a memory leak myself but not sure where to look to track it down.

I need to check and see if there is a newer Dx8 ( think this is where the problem is )

Yes i know the Nvidia pigs have stolen the voodoo because they never could beat it so they assimilated it, at least they didnt taint the 5500, <looks around quickly> and they never will!

Try this clean boot note AH vid res, play the game note fps.
Go back and alter vid res, play the game note vid res, go back to your original vid res and unless i am mistaken you will be unable to get the same fps you originally had unless you reboot.
First noticed this long ago when doing fps checks with different drivers.

If your names unstable (ie Wobbly) dont bother cos i just know your second fps check would be faster  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Try to upgrade to Special Edition that might help. Seems like your PC has a memory leak, or some other OS level problem.

The best thing you can do is format and reinstall with Windows 98 SE.
If you dont have SE, pirate it. You already payed MS for Win98 you shouldnt try to buy it again.

Had SE and dumped it, it slowed the system down  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) I have run 98 non-SE for along time and things didn't go hay wire till I had to use DX8.0 and upgrade my video driver cause it wouldn't work with 8. I will upgrade to 8.0a and see if that fixes it otherwise I will just reboot before I play until a linux version comes out ;p  (I tried with wine and it crashes.Wine is only up to dx6.0 ;p Tho I won't give up yet(Rocket goes to fiddle with wine more) ;p )
