Title: War
Post by: Plawranc on November 23, 2010, 03:09:40 AM
Gents, I am not sure this is absolutely end of the world serious.

But the news is stating that North and South Korea are at war as of this afternoon Australian time. Airstrikes and skirmishing at the moment but could escalate unless diplomatic solution is found.

if not, the US is certain to join in, and if that happens, so will china.

Just a heads up.

They are shooting at eachother, that counts as war in my opinion.

This could get worse. Hoping it doesnt, but its more than likely

Just did in fact.

Kim Jong-il defects to the USA?

North and South Korea "unify" and invade while our economy is 'in shambles', as far as I understand it. Looks to be a promising game.

Hopefully the U.S. won't have to help out South Korea (I want to say again, but I'm no educated in that particular matter...)

The Americans pledging support is a gimme, its hardly an escalation...the North sunk a Southern warship early this year and it didn't blow out.

Ironically, the question is which SIDE will China join in on. There's a very real possibility that China would go AGAINST N. Korea, as IIRC they've been feeling annoyed and threatened by North Korea's belligerence lately as well.

Nothing new. North Korea starts some crap to get attention on a regular basis. It's how the little tin pot dictator gets money. They start an "incident", and in order to placate them, the rest of the world offers them some beads and trinkets to behave. They'll get some food and/or some money in order to behave. Maybe even some sort of trade concessions or something of that nature. Things calm back down, North Korea behaves for a while, then they need food, money, or something else, so they act up again. Lather, rinse, repeat. Another perfect example of why appeasement and placating are never good foreign policies. Other than "scale", it's no different than giving your 4 year old candy in order to get them to behave when you take them to the store.

With angry China to the north, and pretty much everyone on the south, N-Korea is heading into the deepest dungheap.

Indeed.

The big difference though is that if the 4 year old throws a fit he will whine, scream and break stuff. If NK gets a real fit millions may die. There is ofcourse the option of wiping out the NK leadership. If they do they will beat NK but Im very glad i dont live in a city within range of NK artillery.

North Korea not long ago stated that the cease fire that ended the Korean conflict was null and void (I believe it was only a year or two ago).  So, the entire peninsula has been and continues to be a powder keg waiting for a big enough spark.  So far, all the recent squirmishes have not involved any civilian deaths.  Even this shelling of S.K.'s island miraculously avoided killing any civies, but could easily have.  That's the really worrisome aspect of this latest act of war; N.K. seems unconcerned how dangerous their own brinkmanship has become.  Had a bunch of women and children been killed in the arty barrage, what choice would S.K.'s leadership have had, but to respond in kind?  Even now, the pressure by hawks in the South's own military and civilian leadership to respond more agressively to this attack on a largely non-military target.  Worrisome is quite and understatement, actually.  Praying for peace (but fearing the worst).

Don't panic. Really.

You can't think of war outside of economics. And on the economic front, NK is about as threatening as that 4 year old!

They can't feed their own people, much less run a war. They need financial support to just get up in the morning! The only reason Capt. Hair is still in power is the political support of China, which likely fears instability more than it does having an admittedly nutty dictator on a leash. All China has to do is flick an eyebrow to say "ENOUGH" and the problem goes away.

There is no coincidence though that NK let the world know it had industrial scale Uranium enrichment capability just days before it started shooting. They are gambling that they can scare the West into throwing more money at them without scaring China enough to pulling the plug on Kim Jung Il.

China wants NK to be a minor irritant, but would not want a major land war, because then it would be forced to chose between NK and the west. China above all does not want a united korea on its southern border. China will reign in NK quickly if things get hot, because NK will need ammo, food and fuel to launch any serious offensive.

They didn't do too badly last time though did they? We have proved time and time again that you cannot defeat fanatical regimes with technology and firepower, and don't forget who leapt to their aid last time, with our current military commitments and our dire financial circumstances, I think we could rapidly be up a certain creek and paddle-less if the Chinese decide to kick off again :uhoh

25Th ID right? You would go but 82nd, 10th Mountain and 101st would be there about the same time.

I dont want to fight in Korea. I hear people complaing about Mountains in Afghanistan but then I think....The mountains I trained on with all that THICK vegetation would be the ones I would fight on.

No Thanks...we would win but it would be miserable.
