80th Fighter Squadron - AAF
8th Fighter Group - AAF

Subject:  Narrative Report of Mission #181-G, performed b 80th Fighter Squadron , on 25 August 1942.
To:  Commanding Officer, 8th Fighter Group

1.  2 A/P were ordered to recon/sweep Buna village and airdrome, A/P piloted by 1lt. Soulyss, 1lt. Cactus

2.  Climbing through 8000 feet to clear the pass in the Own Stanley mountains, and reach cruising altitude we began the run into target.

3.  Just short of coast our flight was jumped out by a superior number of enemy A/P (identified as A6M's)

Application of proper wingman and element tactics allowed us to defeat the enemy A/P and continue, I claim 3 A/P destroyed

4.  Arriving over Buna another enemy patrol is sighting in the traffic pattern, gaining the sun we dove to attack from approx 6000 ft. In a short engagement that brought us right over the enemy installation, I  claim a further 2 A/P destroyed (A6M)

5.  We began taking ground fire from the airfield and once again under attack from the high CAP, Cactus takes a hit to the engine and we withdraw back to the SE.

6.  Using  the superior deck speed of our A/P to put some distance between Buna and ourselves & despite the smoke the engine was holding together as was the oil pressure and the decision was made to try for Moresby.

7.  Result and observations of the engagement, superior climb and maneuverability of A6M  is very pronounced, a premium must be placed on formation tactics and teamwork.  The flight must not be allowed to break down and every effort made to maintain the two ship element. Results, 5 enemy A/P destroyed (Soulyss) and 2 enemy A/P probably destroyed/damaged (Cactus).

Was definately good fun.  Only way to survive in that 39 is to use your wingmen for cover.   Posted in the 80th forum a paragraph from our favorite P39 pilot book  "Nanette" by Edwards Park.

This popped in my head during the middle of the fights as I was stalled out and ruddering over to dive away.  Compliments to the AvA for giving me a history moment :)

"And then the four of us put our noses way up, to the point of stalling, and we all fired...with the sun's glare behind them the silver Zekes all flashed at once as they rolled on their backs in unison.  Zeros would always do that: Shoot at them, and they'd roll upside down.  Then they'd split-S down on whoever had cut loose.  They were always above us, so they never looked up when they were shot at. They looked down, rolling so the wings wouldn't block the view.  They'd see our tracers go past, whap-whap-whap, and they'd react.  And Blam-blam-blam right back.  Now everyone knows what it's like to fight a Zero..  These flashed again, pale silverly lines against the blue, with the sun half blurring them out.  For a moment we were all facing each other-about twelve of them heading straight down in their split-S; four of us heading straight up, standing on our tails, all stalled out.  I could see the winking lights along their wings as the guns fired.  And we stood up to them--even Nanette--and fired back.  Then instantly she stalled out, and I kicked her nose over and we simply howled earthward, building up splendid speed..  I looked craned around to look behind and saw the rest of the flight diving their heads off all going in different directions.  The Zeros were already giving up the chase..."

The moment :)
