Its been a while hasn't it, was clearing the dust of the controls and thought I would share what has been taking up most (all) of my time.

In about six weeks I have taken this car from a bare powder coated chassis to being able to run. Just recently I found out this car will be sitting in the Pit Stop Cafe at the PRI show. For those that dont know what PRI is its the largest racing industry trade show, it is second only to SEMA for general automotive. Needless to say I am excited, in my opinion this car has become one of the best looking jet dragsters in the country. It has been a lot of work but I am extremely excited to see the attention this car brings at PRI.
Its sister car will be racing in West Palm Beach (this weekend) and at the Bradenton Snowbirds (about nine days from now) race in Florida under the Miller Welding banner. I will be crewing both events if any of you should want to stop by and of course you should also try out our welders for some fun! If you want to get up close and take a look at the Miller car I will be glad to get you the inside tour.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Strip,
what engine you running?

Thanks for all of the compliments guys, I am really excited about seeing it at PRI and testing shortly after. The twin to this car is nearly ready to, it will be sent off to paint in the next couple of weeks. We are hoping to test them together, Elaine Larsen (a real firecracker) is the driver. You can bet I am gunning for a slot though, who wouldn't want to go 270-280 in 5.5 seconds?
The engine is a CJ-610/J-85 with a custom afterburner, not much to write home about otherwise.
I have been doing pretty good personally though, did well at the race track towards the end of this year.
This is a link to a video of the final round of the 3,000 to win Labor Day race, yes I bought dinner, for a week. :lol

I am far lane, ran a 5.12 on a 5.10 at 131 mph (ripped the throttle twice) with a .010 tree, he was .020 also two over for .015 margin at the stripe. We stepped the gear and converter combo up and the car has ran a 4.89 at 139 in the 1/8, about a 7.80@170 pass in the 1/4.

This is a link to the sister car of the one above last weekend in Orlando, it ran 208 to the 1/8 mile in 4.1 seconds. If you listen carefully you can here a ton of screech from the Thriller car in the near lane. I shudder to think what his hot section looked like after that run. The J-85/CJ610 turbines are really bad about tearing parts up from screech when in afterburner at full power.

Strip do you have the frame powdercoated assembled or do you pc then touch up? What are the dimensions? What kind of tubing do you use? I'm assuming you have extremely detailed drawings? I know exactly nothing about the requirements of building that type of frame but I know we could do it.
Just curios because the company I work at does steel manufacturing and powder coating and it might be an arena I could present to the owners as things are slow right now and we have plenty of capacity.
It might be cost prohibitive and a niche market in my area (DFW) but it does bear looking into.

Dichotomy,
The whole chassis is welded up on a jig before it is completely powder coated. The chassis is self is a little over 28' end to end, the wheel base alone is 260" or so. The tubing is 4340N usually 1.5 inch .083 wall but we also use 1, 1.125, 1.25, 1.375 in other areas. The car is assembled on a jig, the prints are largely in our heads or in the fixtures we use. Entering the dragster chassis market right now is a very daunting task though. Few are buying from the surplus of chassis builders, and its showing, people are shutting down. On top of that the industry lives off of the name of the builder, people plop 15k on name just as much as a chassis. If you really wanted to take a look at building them I would suggest buying the SFI spec sheet. It details the type, location and specifications of each bar in a generic form. The SFI spec shows us what bars need to go where in relation to the driver or other items. The exact dimensions vary depending on builder, driver, and engine/propulsion system. Ours are basically built on a jig and laid up as we go using what we know works. Each generation is slightly different from the last, this one is probably the third or fourth now. When your building less than five at a time spread out over a couple of years it is financially not workable to have detailed drawings.
Feel free to ask any other questions you might have though, I will be glad to try an answer them.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Gracias Strip... I thought it would be that way but you never know till you ask right? Actually that impresses me even more because I know the kind of time and effort you have to put into a design to begin with then tinker with it weighing the pros and cons of every decision you make.

The biggest part of the dragster market is for Super Comp and Top Dragster, and most people that buy one for those classes will buy a Worthy or an American. There is the Competition Eliminator market, but those cars are one off and built for certain classes within Comp. Then you have Top Alcohol and Top Fuel, there are maybe 4-5 builders that anyone will use, and that includes teams that build their own in house.

Without a doubt 95% of the dragster market is a within those two categories Captain. On a side not we made two runs today, 278 and 283 mph respectively, both in the mid 5.60s. Gonna make two tomorrow, and two next weekend then it will be a nice winter break for us.
