I learned today, in Physics, that AC/DC was named after a sewing machine. Because the AC(Alternating Current)/DC(Direct Current) was created within a Sewing Machine. That Sewing machine was one of the first sewing machines that had a battery and was chargeable. The Leader of the group, thought it was cool, so he named his rock band after the Sewing machine.
So AC/DC doesn't stand for some super "cool rocked out" name.
:lol
-
I heard somewhere that after they had named themselves someone on a tour somewhere said that AC/DC was another term for a person who is bisexual.

Wikipedia says its the sewing machine story.

well then it must be right....

I was always told that AC/DC got their name by the phrase: After Christ Devil Comes.

I heard the sewing machine story on Metal Mania one day. It was pretty funny :lol

That's probably the most accurate.

i really hope that's not the kind of poop being taught in the schools now....... :(

Not to worry Cap. I'm taking a basic college math class at the local college and my 8th grade son actually knows some of this stuff better then I do. I'd say the kids are alot sharper now then when we went to school. :old:

coolness.........
i just worried about that, because.....well........while it is interesting, there are many many more important things to be teaching our kids.
like what my neice is learning....spanish at the ripe old age of 10. and that actually agitates me too. my brother asked why they were making her take it, and they said because there are non-english speaking students that she(and the other kids) need to communicate with.

Right idea, wrong reason. Having a second language (regardless of which one it may be) at or near fluency is a plus in almost any career path, and allows the language side of your brain to develop differently. Young minds pick up new languages much more easily than old ones. As I said though, that justification is a bunch of crap.

Learning another language is really essential to understanding the construction of English.
-
Learning another language is really essential to understanding the construction of English.
true, but i say make the non-english speaking students learn english instead of the other way around.
i no speaka uno wordo of spangish, thats why im learning russian :D
-

no, it isn't.
what is essential to understanding the construction of english, is for students to pay the eff attention to what they're being taught in english.
if anyone is going to learn a second language, it should be those that do not know english.
when i went to school, it was voluntary, and i took 2 years of spanish. it was a waste of time. i passed easily, and still couldn't even begin to hold a conversation in spanish.

now with Work I am regretting I slept thru Spanish class's back in school. I could of used it today with the different area's I work in as a Medic but then again i would have to learn Russian, Also heck no! my favorite Spanish Phrase is Cinco Demia even if that is spelled correctly Most important tho is a Beer drinking day :)

right around here, i'd have to learn the different dialects of indian(if there is more than one), spanish, and russian. that is of course assuming i was going to cater to those not willing to assimilate into our society....but i should stop here before i get meself skuzzified.

Probabally the best spanish to be taught is this phrase
"Excuse me, can I see your green card please?"
Lets see how many spanish speaking people are around after that

How do you like them [cheap] apples? Or any high-labor crop we grow in the US, for that matter.
CAP as I said I agree that the reason she is learning Spanish is a terrible one, but nonetheless having a second language in your tool set is a great thing.

Nah, the justification is the reasons you described. A lot of business to be done using the Spanish language. Cap is just upset that it is Spanish. Had it been German he would have been praising the school for doing so. They are doing the same to our school and the reasons stated were not kids that don't speak English. That is a bunch of you know what :lol

no, really i wouldn't.
this is something that should be either the students choice, or if they're too young, then their parents choice. i don't have issues with learning another language......but rather i have issues with our kids being forced to learn another language.
and as for other people coming here not knowing english? if i see that they're trying, i work with them. when i get someone that simply wants me to talk to them in their language.....not gonna happen.
the indian guys that pump gas out front of my shop are perfect example. they have actually learned to understand english fairly decently. they have serious trouble speaking it though, and they try like hell to talk to me in english.....so i do my best to try to understand them, and i try to teach them how to pronounce words they have trouble with too.

hey do you know that cinco the mayo is not really a mexican holiday? It was a holiday created by a beer company to sell more beer :rofl.

did you know nickelback's name came from the lead singers sister?
some story about how she was at the grocerystore and she gave the cashier a nickel to much and so he asked her is she wanted her "nickel back" and after hearing that they decided it was a cool name to go with.
least i think thats how the story goes.

well, they are forced to learn geography, math, physics, etc. Why not a language? It cannot be parents or kids choice since we cannot have a teacher for every language. So why not pick the most popular second language in this country? In mine they pick the most popular there (French or English and some German here and there).

because you do not need a second language. it can be helpful, but it is not necessary. the subjects you mentioned are pretty much necessary.
when i said it should be the parents choice, i didn't mean that you should be able to choose which language, but whether or not your child is taught whichever language is being offered.
and again, they even told my brother thagt they're teaching the kids spanish so that they can communicate with their non-english speaking fellow students.........

Really? You use differential equations a lot in your life? Calculating current and magnetic fields a lot? Creating complex organic components? A second or third language would be more helpful to people.

You know, I will keep calling BS on that. It does not make any sense. Never heard of it. It is easier to just teach them English. bla bla bla. I wont deny that some idiot might have thought that was the reason and they may have relay that to you or your brother, but comon. Some common sense eh? We both know the problem is that it is the language the "illegals" use and that is what bugs people about Spanish.

i actually do deal with current......remember? i fix cars? diagnose, and repair em? you'd be surprised how many problems are caused by something as simple as the wrong lightbulb(which flows a different current).
maybe you';re right on that.....maybe my brother misunderstood what he was told.
and the "illegals" use spanish, german, russian, indian....whatever country they come from, that is the language they';re gonna use.......
it would bug me just as much with any other language.....

Hire americans with a working man's wage.
Punish anyone who hires illegals at a fine of $50,000 per illegal

no, it isn't.
what is essential to understanding the construction of english, is for students to pay the eff attention to what they're being taught in english.
That's what's important to score well on tests- which is all that's important to most, sure.
True comprehension of structure and construction of your language is something that requires complete abstraction it seems, at least this has been my own experience and the experience of pretty much everyone I've ever talked to about the subject.
I never 'really' understood some pretty basic concepts of English... I mean, yeah, I could pick out things like objects, infinitives, clauses... but actually understanding what they were, how an entire sentence, and each of its bits, functions as an expression of thought never occurred to me until I started learning German (and, as I've said before, this is a common observation among pretty much everyone I've ever spoken to). And, due to the policies of my school district (which are pretty much similar to schools all around the country), this didn't come until the 8th grade.
Every child should learn a foreign language from an early age, just for the sake of mental exercise. I don't particularly like Spanish either, which is why I still don't know any, but the fact of the matter is that Spanish is a natural choice for this, for several reasons: obviously, Spanish is a Romance language, so vocabulary and to a lesser extent grammatical structure is already fairly familiar, or should be made familiar as over half of English is based on Latin & Romanic roots)- Spanish, being a Romance language, also sets you up for other Romance languages you may want to learn out of your own interest, whether that be French, Italian, Latin, etc.. But, in the end, what puts Spanish above Danish or French or German (to say nothing of Latin), is that living in the United States, like it or not, you have more opportunities to speak Spanish with native speakers than any other language beside English... it's easier to practice and, again, like it or not, has more practical application... Which is important if you'd really like to make it something more than a mental exercise.

heaven forbid the minority become the majority and change the language, just like it happened some 200 years ago :noid.

I'm curious what you consider a working man's wage. Depending on that answer, I'm also curious how you would explain the spike in fruit and veggie prices, along with the corresponding loss of production to foreign markets. (Namely in South America) You think losing heavy industry was bad? :uhoh

I think he is under the misconception that illegals still work cheaper than their legal counterparts.
on one hand, they do, as they generally work for cash, and do not pay taxes.....thus it is cheaper for their employer. on the other hand, they do not work for less $/hour anymore, as in the past.

Thats so true . One could get work done for around 5 dollars a hour and now they want 15 , cash . Good thing in a way because I am getting some of my brick work back . I think every Mexican in the world knows how to lay brick . Mite not look as good as mine but still was anought to close my business 6 year's back .

Oh please. Can you sit through 8-9 hours of lectures in one day? Imagine energetic children doing this and it is much harder. The best teachers always do something to get the kids interest. Now Amaazee will remember what Alternating Current and Direct Current are and how it is applicable.

lol, always comes down to the "Mexican". You guys try to make your posts sound like they are nothing but just cool carrying conversations but at the end, it is all about race :aok
I said it in a previews thread. If you were born here, grew up here, had what "here" makes available to you, and you have to compete with an illegal immigrant that does not even speak the language for a job, first blame yourself! Then try to use what "here" makes available to you to do something about it other than whining. :lol

It's no misconception, as you indicate in your second point. When you aren't paying any sort of benefits/taxes whatsoever, cost out of employer pocket is significantly reduced. Not only that, but the wages (while higher than they used to be) are at least from what I have seen still lower than what citizens would be asking for a full day of back-breaking labor. I'm not saying we don't need to work towards a solution, just that it's not as simple as some purport.

Wrong! The illegals use false/stolen social security numbers and falsified documents for the I-9 form. The employer still pays taxes. The only way around it is that he can pay cash. Then he has to show where the cash went.
I think you'd be surprised at what some illegals make per year. They can also claim 10 dependants.... why??? because they are uasing stolen SS.
-

So then, you are saying that they do pay taxes? Only thing that makes them different is a stamp that says legal? :rofl
Make your minds please. Are they stealing by not paying taxes and ss or not? :rofl You guys can't even hate for the same reasons lol.
How do you come up with all this crap? No one has to show where the cash went unless they claim it from their taxes. In that case, you are talking about a legal breaking several laws in the name of profit but hating the elegal working his arse off for food?
-
most work for cash. if they're working for cash, you can bet they're not paying taxes, nor are their employers that are paying them that cash. it is very very easy to "account" for where your cash went. if it's done right, you'll never have to actually account for it, because it'll never trip any flags with the irs.
shop i used to work at it was easy to tell when illegals were coming in. they'd have pa registered cars, with pa dl, and still live in nj. that's because pa gives dl's to illegals(unless that's changed, but i was told this by.......an illegal years ago). they'd pay for any work done in cash.....even if it was over $1k........
the biggest savings to the employers is not having to chip in their taxes, even if they are paying them what they'd pay you.
