Title: Anyone here build full-size joysticks?
Post by: Treize69 on December 03, 2010, 11:27:38 PM
Or know anyone who does? I'm looking to build a simple simpit, and want to have a floor-length joystick (just the standard grip mounted on a pole or stick and bolted to the ground, not a scratchbuilt grip) to put in it- but I have no knowledge of working with electronics to try and manage it myself.

If anyone can help, or can put me in contact with a third-party who can, a PM would be greatly appreciated.  :salute

I'm looking for something like this-

But with a simple straight extension, not that curved one.

Yep I have seen them in an online catalog some where recently. A place for you to start might be a check through some links over at SimHQ.com in the pit builders section. There are guys there that build those types and sell them and also some companies that make em and they are "advertised" by other users in that forum.

I remember back in aw days, one squadie got drunk and he took his apart and used the handle from a plunger as an extension, was funny.

well I got my magnets and hall sensors in. The halls are not exactly what I wanted but in the US I can't find the A1323EUA-T wich is 2.5mv/G and settled for the less sensitive 5mv/G untill I can locate a supplier in the US that has the allergo A1323EUA-T.

I had a U-Joint that would have been perfect out of a NASCAR steering shaft but I managed to mess up a bering and they are not made to come apart, as they are rated for high speeds so there is no replacement bearing...could buy a new one but they are $50 each...searching for a new U-joint....will keep you who are following this thread posted.

An Important update! I found a U-joint dealer that has a machine shop and he is considering producing the items I need to MOD or build fighter sticks for those of US who want a full length stick !!!!!!

what kind of material are you using for the extension arm and are you having it bent somewhere locally?

I'm thinking on using 3/4 or 1" conduit for my initial testing....I will bend it myself. When I make them for others I will have them send me a full size drawing in the mail for custom bends and lengths (powder coating will cost extra)

This is how I modified my x52pro, it's pretty simple if it's just a straight extension.

Inside the base the stick portion of the gimbal is a metal shaft, I found that 3/16th stainless steel tube would slide inside of it. In my first attempt I used a cotter pin thru the two pieces to  hold them together. This added a bit more slop to the center but it allowed me to experiment with a couple of configurations before finalizing a design. My next step will be to have the the shafts welded together but I'm still working on improving the spring tension adjustment to allow for more flexibility.

I would extend the shaft through the bottom of the shaft and secure four springs N/S/E/W.
I might try this with my X52 with the Magnet Mod
