Title: Did I have a seizure or something weird?
Post by: redman555 on December 04, 2010, 03:16:44 PM
Well last night I got brought to the hospital by an ambulance.  I got home from a movie and jumped on my PS3 for 30 minutes, all of a sudden I got this odd feeling and put my controller down.  Next thing I know I feel like im spinning around, I can hear but everything is blurry.  I fall out of my chair, hit my head on my bed and couldn't move.  Next thing I know I slightly open my eyes at the end of my hallway (no idea how I got there, im assuming I crawled).  I could hear but couldn't talk or move.  My mom came up stairs and walked over me, she thought I was just screwing around.  Then when she came back down stairs she realized something was wrong, and called an ambulance.  Apparently when I was trying to talk it was just coming out like "blag bhah" and they couldn't understand it.  When the ambulance got to my house I had blood pressure of 175/126.  I basically couldn't move at all, it felt like my arms and legs weighed 400lbs and they were all rubber. The thing is, the doctors said it didn't seem like a seizure or stroke, but they arent sure.  Was curious if anyone may know what this could have been?  I got home at 1:45am and was at hospital since about 9pm.  My body feels really sore, which is why I thought it was a seizure, almost like went to gym and worked every muscle in my body.

Im a 19 year old college student, idk if that matters but yeah...

Sounds like it could have been a seizure, curious why the doc didn't think it was one.
Some video games are known to trigger seizures. as well as stroboscopic lights, and certain sounds.

Don't be surprised if DMV notifies you that they are suspending your driving privileges. SOP in many states when a person loses consciousness for unknown reasons.

Strange... well if its not a seizure and its not a stroke, what is it? If its something new maybe they'll name it after you or let you name it. JK

But really it is strange the doctor doesn't know what it is.

BB I hope you find out what it is and it's not serious.  As you age (ya I know 19 isn't much of an age) different things happen.

Thoughts are with ya sir.

Definitely weird, I suppose doctors don't make a big deal out of something unless it's a reoccurring incidence.  I'm definitely not a doctor, but that sounds a lot like a seizure.  The odd feeling before, loss of consciousness, sore muscles, typical symptoms of a seizure.  Good Luck.

<-- I'm a doc

Sounds like a kind of seizure, but not the classic "grand mal."

For a generalized seizure, there must be complete loss of consciousness. (That's what make it generalized, it affects the entire brain.) Since you didn't lose consciousness, you didn't have a generalized classic Grand Mal seizure.

However, you did have several things that do sound like seizure. A partial seizure affects a certain area of the brain. It can spread after that, with something called "Jacksonian March" to affect progressively more of your body until it becomes generalized. Doesn't sound like you had that either.

Then there's a type called "partial complex". These can have a wide variety of presentations, and to be honest your symptoms kinda suggest this type. Won't say more than that - of course, over the internet I'd be silly to make a diagnosis, and you'd be silly to believe one!

However, you definitely need to see your doctor to follow up on this. Depending on the medical community where you live, you may end up getting tests ordered by your doctor, or you may get referred to a neurologist. If it were me, I'd be wanting to see CT of the head with and without contrast, and would like to get an EEG (maybe sleep deprived, which increases the likelihood of a positive test.) I'd also make sure they knew this event was triggered while playing video games - would make sense to include "photic stimulation"  (flashing lights).

Whether the law requires it or not where you are, I'd consider avoiding driving, climbing, or doing other potentially dangerous activities until you know what's going on.

Good luck!

You had another health related issue lately (Flu-like symptoms if I recall correctly).  I can't help but think the two are related.  Does the doc know about that issue also?  Definately have a chat with your Doc and tell him about any symptoms you've had lately.  Don't procrastinate.

Best wishes sir.   :pray :salute

Question for you sim.  Is it possible I had a TIA stroke, and that caused the siezure?

See a doctor BigBob, second opinions are worth it.

If you can get past some of the rhetoric, this is a great video.

My old neighbor use to have seizures. But when he would have them, he said he would feel it coming on the whole day. Then next thing i know, he would be busting out of his front door saying "help me momma" Over and over until his whole body got stiff as a board and he would fall over like a tree. Feet and hands would curl in and body would start twitching violently. Pretty damn scary. I had to hold his head a couple of times to keep him from slamming it on the ground. That is my only experiences with seizures.

Hope all is well with you bud. Ill say a prayer for your health.

Pretty unlikely. As a college age kid, strokes don't happen that often. When they do, they are usually found in people who have abnormal blood vessels from birth and are not related to hardened arteries.

A TIA is a brief (under 20 minutes) neurologic symptom that is caused by a blocked artery. It resolves when the clot blocking the artery dissolves itself.  On the other hand, brief neurologic symptoms can be caused by seizures, and in that situation the symptom resolves because the seizure moves on - there never was a risk of permanent symptoms when seizure causes it.

Sim--See for last few years I've been getting this really weird thing.  It's totally random, sometimes once a week, other times every few days. It's real weird.   When I touch something it feels like the texture is going through my body and then I have to stand up and not touch stuff, I know it sounds weird but that is the feeling I had before this happened last night.  Never has it ended up like this before though.  Normally only lasts like 1-2 minutes.

Of course I hope you are well and ok redman, but I hope you aren't planning on being a pilot or joining the military...  Seizures or episodes like that are pretty much disqualifying from flight duties.  There are occasional instances of waivers being granted, but those are usually for people who already have their wings.

I think you ought to figure out what caused it and make darn sure that if it is based on external stimulus, you avoid that sort of thing for good.  Also, avoid drugs/alcohol like the plague because that stuff will just make it worse and could ruin your life if it contributes to more episodes.  Avoid stimulants as well, including caffeine.  Anything that alters your body's basic metabolism could contribute.

Feel free not to answer this Bob, but do you have a past history of trauma or abuse, in or out of the family?

I get a really intense form of vertigo when I attempt to play certain FPS games regardless of the console. I first noticed it when Castle Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem came out way back in the old days. I might be able to make it through 15-30 minutes before I got intense nausea and dizziness. Flight sims, sports games, puzzle, those types of computer or console games don't cause me any problems; however if I try to play most shooters with indoor type maps and levels I can't do it. I have been able to make it through MW2, COD Medal of Honor and others lately with little to no vertigo feelings but its not always the case.

Another (less likely) thought - migraines can cause transient neurologic symptoms that can be, well, just about anything. Most commonly - nausea, vomiting, visual flashes without there being any reason for those other than the migraine. However, in some cases the migraine can cause more significant and focused neurologic findings, up to and including coma. (Read a research paper about a family in Australia that ends up on ventilators when they get bad migraines, because they get such deep neurologic suppression.)

The diagnosis can be easy to miss, because many folks get the mistaken idea that in order to count as a migraine it HAS to be an awful headache. While some migraines really are killers, others are mild enough that they are mistaken for sinus or tension headaches.

Something to think about if you had even the slightest headache with these spells, especially if the headache was on one side.

__________

And a point with seizures - it can help docs to decide if really seizure or not if you tell them whether there was either A) loss of control of bowel or bladder with the event; and B) if after the spell there was a period of time where you were particularly tired or foggy.

PRetty common phenomenon. Tends to happen when the brain is getting confusing information about head and body position from various sensor systems. So, when the eyes say "head just turned rapidly right" and the balance centers in the ears say "dude, nothing's moving" the brain responds with vertigo. You'll see it more as the peripheral vision is filled with the moving image (the IMAX theater effect) and, well, as the body ages.

Negative sir, my family has a quite of bit health problems though, mainly high blood pressure and other heart problems.

And sim, I get migraines once in awhile but never had one when this happens.

Now that I think of it I have a friend that was riding a bicycle, hit a bump and his chain fell off. He flipped over the handle bar head first... I think you know where this is going. I wasent there but I heard from someone who was there, it sounded bad to me.

so have you had any problems since you got home that night?

It could be something to do with your heart. That would explain the tingling you get every so often. It might also explain the weakness in your body when said episodes occur. I'm no doctor so I'll have to get Sim to back me up... If I'm correct/plausible, that is.

Yep I think the first time I ever remember getting anything like that was in an panorama movie theater at Disney Epcot back when I was about 15-16. They were showing something like flying over a glacier (IIRC) and I literally threw up in the theater right in front of where I was standing. My dad took me outside and the Disney medical staff met me at the door to check me out. Apparently that happened quite a bit with that place.

As a side note I don't have a problem flying in real life in any weather in a big plane or little planes as a passenger. Been in all kinds of bad stuff in all types of aircraft with no trouble.

Not very likely, but do consider any food that may have been consumed before this happened. I went to the doctors 3 times about a skin allergy reaction. The doctors had no clue, they gave me the usual crap about stress. I finally figured out I have a reaction to red peppers usually found in hot food. The person who finally gave me the idea that hot food was causing itchy red blisters was a stripper, go figure, lol.

I have had somthing like that, I was playing on my PS3 for about an hour stood up took a step and I couldn't see, fell over and hit my head. I was out for about 5 seconds, It didn't hurt just a little light headed.
