Title: Why?? (Just a rant)
Post by: DREDIOCK on December 04, 2010, 10:20:13 PM
When one stops to consider all of the various types of sites I go to. And not all of them particularly child or work friendly. And the fact that everyone here has the exact same security setups on their machines. Thats 4 separate computers in this house.

Why is it that I, Am the only one in this )#*@!(!)!_   !)#(@)!_#$$! Family that can go months and years without ever contracting a virus, trojan or other nasty on my machine and other here seem to contract them semi regularly in spite of having the same security features???

These people manage to find stuff that ESET doesnt see.

The latest is "Antivirus software alert" Which my son managed to pick up and is proving to be a difficult one to fix.

Then again. If the bastage would just let me have his laptop here instead of trying to fix it himself, Which amounts to asking me what to do. Then going and doing what he wants to do. Or in trying to do things in at warp speed instead of taking his time and letting things work.
It might have been fixed already.

Why is it again in spite of all the things I do. that my machine always seems to run relatively clean and smooth and more times then not free of hassles and they all manage to clog theirs up in spite of my telling them what not to do.

example.. "you dont need 4 different photo editors. Pick one and remove the rest" considering most of the so called "Editing" mostly consists of cropping and resizing and using the general 1 click tools that come with pretty much every program, like redeye removal. This should not be a hard concept.

I'm tired of after listening to complaints of "My computer is too slow", Looking at it and seeing 60+ processes running sometimes then doing Google search after Google search to find out just WTF this program is only to find out its some little mundane application that insists on putting itself in startup.

I swear. If I ever become emperor of the intardnat. the first law Im going to pass is that all software no matter how legitimate should provide the option on installation on if you want it to run on startup or not.

Well. gotta go. the son is banging things around again. gonna see if he is ready just to hand his laptop over and just let me mess with it.

Kids gotta learn to slow down. Half the time he tries to do things too fast. As a result. the mistakes are as predictable and the sun rise

Because you're savvy enough to know that when something you want to see displays a box that says "flash required - click here to install" that you already have flash, and it's bogus.
Because you're savvy enough to just close out when you get the pop up with the animated gif that says "You have 37 infections, click here to remove them."
Because you're savvy enough to know that no matter how many coupons for how many companies it promises you, it's nothing but trouble...

There are some Operating Systems that are a little more resistant to the evils of the internet and user-abuse than Windows.

No there are not. Its just Windows is targeted more often.

In my humble opinion it is a little more complex than that.

Ive got 2 step daughters and the eldest somehow always breaks her laptop. since most of my friends and family know i am good with pc's i always get the call to come and fix this or that.

i made a rule a few years ago that i would never work on a machine that some1 else has "fixed" or worked on, as i find people who know nothing about pc's and know they know nothing wont mess with it that much. its the people who "think" they no what there doing that are the biggest problem, instead of realising they know some stuff but need help with other things.

my point was proved to a large degree when i got a job as an engineer at a laptop, desktop refurbishing factory for a major UK retailer. a lot of people came in with the attitude i know what I'm doing - I'm the greatest with IT and then coming up against a "simple" problem and they have no idea. some didn't even know what a bios was.

i learnt to help when asked and walk away when i banged my head against a brick wall.

One helpful solution is also to set the computer up clean, install the software that is needed and put data such as photos and so forth on a separate partition or disk. Then make an image of the disk before releasing it to the end user. Makes for a much faster recovery in the event of disaster.

I have had to completely reformat, and reinstall my daughters system 4 times in the last 16 months. Averages out about once every 4 months. Facebook is the devil I swear, if I could get her off of that one site I think she'd be ok.

Told her after fixing it one   last  time, that if you screw it up this time you can buy a computer. And then when you have problems call tech support not me. I'm done. Either learn what your doing and stop doing it, or figure out where your going that is causing the problem.

I'm not fixing it again.

Instead of fixing peoples computers.....send them to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407) have them read (try this before posting)....then let them spend a day scrubbing and I'll bet they will be more carefull about what they click on.  If you fix it for them they won't care. If they fix it they won't bother you anymore.  :old:

I don't think my kid has EVER received a link in an IM/email that she hasn't clicked on. I finally bought an external usb, cloned her laptop, and put the drive in the closet, awaiting the inevitable "Dad....my computer is doing weird stuff"

I am the ONLY one in my family who is EVER allowed to use a Windows user account that is a member of group "Administrators".  All others are plain "Users".

And they still manage to shoot themselves in the foot here at der Binohaus, too.  Silly users.  *sigh*

Having spent a large amount of yesterday clearing a clients laptop of 29 virus's, 16k plus separate infections - some people should just pack em up and ship em back, they're too stupid to have a computer.

Mind, if he didnt spend so much time looking at porn, I'd be out of a job lol............

Or having clients who open every attachment on every email they receive, which is always nice (cept on a netbook with no way to install anything, that was fun)

You all have my sympathies lol.......

The latest is "Antivirus software alert" Which my son managed to pick up and is proving to be a difficult one to fix.

I have read that most AV's don't pick that malware up. I use Kaspersky and it did not alert me to it. I used counter spy on a trial run and found it.
I never did click on the page to go to the websight for the antivirus junk (more malware) they are promoting. I use cntrl, alt, delete and get rid of the popup as fast as I can. It still managed a way to get into my registry.

As was mentioned before by someone , I now scan in safe mode also for malware.

hehe, never fix someone's computer right away, wait at least a week after they start crying. Unless it's your mom of course :)

I wish I could take that attitude of walking away from one that someone has "fixed". I have two brothers (in their 50s) who both know they can fix anyone's computer. Yeah, right. Last time she flew me 1700 miles for IT work hehe. She learned, and doesn't tell them when she messes up now so they don't get to installed their favorite email reader. Now the conversation usually goes something like "mom, click on the date to re-sort your email"  :lol  She's 83, and I'm always amazed she hasn't had more problems with all the health sites she visits, they're worse then porn.

LOL daughters system sat for 3 months after the last one. I was in no rush to fix it to only have to fix it again.

BTW one other minor tip that has worked well for me.
When reinstalling partition the drive to at least 2 partitions.
Install your main working OS not on C:\windows but on D:\ windows.

Its amazing how many bugs simply can't make that one simple little switch.

Or put a linux distro on C:\  same difference only with more options if you get bugged up again.

Also for that system which is infected a "boot from cd" linux distro like Ubuntu 10 can be a pretty handy cleaning tool with no chance of it getting infected.  :)

Same thing here, 3 Daughters the Youngest one thinks she knows everything, after the 3@4 time of screwing up her laptop, I told her next time you on your own, and I will block the mac address on the firewall and you will not be on the network @ home... 2 months later and she is still not on the network, and I now feeling the pain as her older sisters will not let her use their laptops etc...

ages 22, 20 and 17... the Youngest is the biggest pain in the ass.... you would think she would learn!
