Title: Wireless router help
Post by: Heretic on December 07, 2010, 06:32:58 PM
Fellas,

I could use some help on picking up a new router. I'm currently using a Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router. My son plays Xbox 360 online and can't play in his bedroom because he can't get a signal for the internet. Why? I have no clue. Obviously I'm not all that hip on computer related stuff

My house is ranch style with just one floor with a crawlspace. His bedroom is the furthest away from the router. I really don't wanna by an 100 foot ethernet cable so what should I do?

He gets no signal, or he just can't connect?  If it's the former do you have a laptop or other wireless device that you can take into his room and see if you can detect the signal?

For online gaming, you'll need a N+ router.  Not as good as hardwired, but it'll do.  Ya should be able to pick one up for less than $100.

Make sure that your kid has the wireless adapter for the 360 as well.  I don't know for sure, but I think you have to buy that seperately (from the 360).

My son does have the wireless adapter.  My son just said that can connect in his bedroom but the signal strength is so weak that it kicks him offline. My son does have his own laptop computer and he can connect and stay online in his bedroom.  Thanks so far fellas with the help.

100 ft of ethernet cable isn't really all that expensive.  Running it on the other hand can be a PITA.

Yeah he did have a 100ft cable and yes it did look like an eyesore. Then the puppies chewed on it and destroyed it.  So much for the cable!!  LOL

Iff you have a timber floor and can get under the house, use a spade bit to put an appropriate sized hole in the floor at the router and in his room then run the cable under there out of eyesore and puppies way.

Or you can get a repeater/amplifier and place it closer to his room.

Make sure your wireless is secure. If not, everybody in the hood can connect to you. This will result in loss of bandwidth,
discos, etc.

Sometimes just moving the router away from an EMI source or putting it higher up will improve the signal.
