Title: Monitor resolution??

Hey guys,

I really don't remember if my new monitor has always been this way BUT, I noticed that the display isn't filling the whole screen.

There is about an inch or so around the whole screen that is black. a little thinner on the bottom and top.

I checked a help guide when I tried to check the resolution, it said the recomended res for a 24" lcd was 1920 by 1200.

Mine is set at the "recomended" res of 1920 x1080. I don't even see the 1200 portion listed in my control panel.

This black border is NOT there on my start up / log in screen for the computer. The screen is filled.

I've tried the part of the computer that says "stretch , fill" etc. And its also set to "landscape".

I'm using a Dell ST2410 with Windows 7 Home. An ATI 5870. (I poked around a bit in there also, scary stuff)

Am I just trippin out, or is it supposed to be this way??

No it's not supposed to be that way.

What model monitor do you have?

Widescreen monitors typically use either an aspect ratio of 16X10 or 16X9.  Not too long ago, 16X10 was common, but 16X9 has become more popular because it matches the same aspect ratio as the hi-def 720/1080 standard.

Typically, a hi-def monitor will use 1920X1200 if it is 16X10, and it will use 1920X1080 if it is 16X9.

I checked the specifications for your ST2410 monitor and it is indeed a 16X9 aspect ratio monitor, using a resolution of 1920X1080, so that's what you want to set your desktop resolution and your aces high resolutions at.

You also need to go through your video card settings... select "Enable GPU Scaling" and select "Maintain Aspect Ratio".  This should eliminate the bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and the black bars on the side should only appear when you use a more narrow resolution (a non-widescreen resolution for example like 1280X1024).

The "Maintain Aspect Ratio" should have the same affect as the "Scale-to-fit" example in the following illustration:

Thanks for that!  Since I use Tray Tools instead of CC I didn't know the exact menu 'terminology' that was being used by ATI.
