Title: Win2K PRO questions.....
Post by: Wobble on April 16, 2001, 12:27:00 PM
1:
when i look under 3DFX tools and on the advanced features tab there is no area that lets you select AGP 1x or 2x...

where did it go?
does 2K set it automatically?

2:I installed Win2k from within ME and selected the "clean install" option

However, i still have windows ME on my system, it gives me the option to pic with OS i want at startup.

How do i get rid of ME and just keep 2K, do i just delete the windows dir???

3: any suggested tweaks/good sights yall would recommend??

To deal with your points in order:

1 - AGP: Pass. Are you getting a similar frame rate?

2 - ME still extant: This is a good thing! A good IT officer always endeavours to have a backup.

Do you still have the V5 in your system Wobble?  (It appears so.)  If that is the case, don't worry about AGP speed.  3DFX never did figure out how to take advantage of it and the Voodoo 5s are basically just like a PCI version with AGP interface.  In other words the AGP speed doesn't help them.

If you do the Radeon though, then you want 2x at least.

ooo, major negative there, with ME running if i set the AGP to 1x insted of 2 i get abut a 1/3 reduction of FPS..

AND I STILL WANT ME OFF THIS THING!

Wobble: what youre experiencing is just another feature of W2k. Unfinished drivers..

I have similar problems with SB Live! under w2k, the volume control freaked out on AH.

Had to set all the sounds to 1% level, still flaps and gear come at earshattering level - had to remove them. If I lower general volume, other games and Wilco will sound too silent.

"Not ready?"  Works great for me.  Of course if your hardware doesn't have good driver support, not much you can do.

As far as removing ME, if you installed 2000 in the same partition as ME, you could probably just remove c:\windows if you weren't planning on using ME, and then remove the ME option from boot.ini.  This way you can get it to boot without prompting you for OS.  (You could also just reduce the timeout to zero seconds.)

I have Win2k on it's own partition, Win98 on it's own partition, and all my files on another partition.  If Win2k dies on me I can transition to Win98 easily until I get Win2k fixed.  It is very convenient this way.

Do you have a small hard drive?  I cannot understand why you'd want to remove ME after installing Win2k.

I didnt have any driver problems in the least, in fact almost all of my hardware..some of which is very non standard like my optical mouse and memorex MX2500 keyboard installed all their features without having to load the separate drivers for them.

The problems were:
A: direct X hated operation flashpoint for some reason.

b: bootup took forever.

C: hogged memory.

I have 384 mb of mem and i was under the impression that 2000 would be more efficent with it than 98/ME but as it turned out

98 running just explorer and taskman took up 65mb of 384.

ME running just explorer and taskman (or their counterparts) took up 96mb of 384

also all my games had a FPS aswell.

I want too thrilled with it,..

What ever happend to Windows XP?
whats the deal with that?

FYI Win2k is packed with services that you don't need.. Disable them and it will work faster.

Also W2k memory management can be tweaked, I did so and I get better FPS in w2k than 98SE both dx8.0a.
