Title: Aircraft Handeling
Post by: nasty on December 17, 2010, 03:53:31 PM
I have just noticed that the last time I flew the F4U-1a Corsair the fastest i was hit at level flight was 300mph the F4U-1A was the first plane to pass 400mph in level flight i was no where near it. I have noticed ths with other planes too like the P51 and Spitfires.

Please add your opinion

If you can't get past 300 in a F4U-1a, fix your throttle first.
Because we can.

Also, got to remember to retract your landing gear and flaps.

What altitude were you at?

What altitude does the real F4U-1A need to be at to reach or exceed 400 mph?

What needs to be fixed?

Here is the AH performance of the f4u-1a & c

It does above 400 with wep.

You weren't heavy were you?

I had a squadie that threw a fit the first night he was trying out AH online with us.  He was flying a hog and did nothing but complain about what a pig it was and how it couldn't have possibly been modeled correctly.  He was slow and could hardly even turn in dogfights.

We finally noticed he had left his hog configured with 2x 1000lbs eggs.

It was easier after he got rid of those.

:rofl,

It's actually the XF4U-1 credited with breaking 400 mph in level flight.

Both the -1 @12,039 lbs, and -1A @ 12,175 lbs can do it around 19k ft without wep, and at around 12k ft with wep.

Whats really interesting is watching these planes, in game, fly at and/or near these speeds with their gear down :huh

Actually, in the game, these planes don't fly that fast (or even nearly that fast) with their gear down

They can however, lower their gear as a dive brake, which is probably what you're seeing.  The F4U gear was designed (in RL) to be used as a speed brake.  Lowering the gear in AH is used as a means to slow down, which is how they were intended to be used...

Some people also lower their gear in AH in a miss-informed attempt to turn better.  Those folks will quickly find that while the gear does help them slow down (as it was intended) it doesn't help them turn (it wasn't intended to be used that way), and it quickly takes them to a speed below optimal turning speed (working as it was designed), which gets them into all sorts of trouble, and generally killed (because they aren't using the gear/speed brake as intended).

Well since you've asked, my opinion is that you need to go learn you some more about airplanes and the physics of how they actually work and fly.  ;)

is it possible confusion with IAS and TAS?
