had a jaguar towed in last week. the guy said he drives it once, maybe twice a month. the battery was dead. that was his only complaint.
i push it in the bay.....it took three of us. these dam things DO NOT like to roll. anyway, get it in, after charging the battery for an hour....no start, no crank.....so the battery isn;t taking a charge....it's about 20F outside, and there ain't no way in hell i'm changing that battery outside.
inside, catch my breath, put a new battery in it, and fire it up. and TRY to fire it up. and again. and again. WTF?? i check it for any sort of security system, it has none. i stop here, and call the customer.
i asked him again....did this thing run before? he insists that it did, so i told him it didn't run now. are you sure that you've driven it recently? he insists yes, and that it ran perfectly. i get the ok from him to diagnose why it now will crank forever, but not start. got spark, got injector pulse, got unrestricted airflow, and got fuel pressure.
pull the feed line off at the pressure regulator, stick the end in a clean jug, and crank. whatever the hell came out of there wasn't gas.
another phone call to the customer. are you sure this thing ran well? he still insists it did, and asks me what i found. i explain to him that i pumped more water through the pump than gas, and insisted on his coming down to the shop to see it.(i like being able to show customers....visuals do more than anything i could say).
he gets to the shop(meanwhile i'm perusing the old receipts from the previous shop he used to use, finding one mentioning running rough going uphill), and i show him the jug with about 10 ounces of stuff from his car. about 8 ounces were water.
he gives me the ok to drain the tank, and flush his entire fuel system out. talking to him after he gave me the ok, he mentions what i found in the receipt. about running rough.(duh!!)
15 gallons of fuel from the tank....nearly 2 full gallons of water in it. even once it separated from the water, the color was just wrong.....too dark. contaminated. i pull the fuel filter off, run air through that line, and dump a gallon in the tank, and with the fuel pump outlet in a jug again, i crank the engine...more water.
it appeared that jaguars ingenious design of a fuel(petrol) filler on top with NO FRIGGING WEATHERSTRIPPING was the culprit(combined with a bad gas cap). the water appears to be allowed into the well by design, and then drained out through a drain tube slightly smaller than a bic pen. that clogged...so every time it rained, water was introduced into the tank.
he picked it up today, nice and happy.
what's wrong with this picture? this is what was drained from the fuel filter.

and of course there's today.
i gave myself a fat lip when a wrench slipped, and i nearly knocked myself out.
my heater keeps tripping the overtemp circuit breaker......can't figure out why the burn chamber is overheating.
my printer kept beeping at me telling me it had a paper jam/....even when there was no paper in it. it is now deceased.
i'm still a little high from the gas fumes from finishing up on the jag.
a big piece of something blew into the side of my brand new $6k enclosed car trailer, putting a nice big dent, and scratch down the side.

So thats where my safety glasses went.

Some days your the wrench, some days your the nut.

Don't I know that feeling, just changed my manifolds for a Stainless Pwerflow full system, was under the damned car every day for about two weeks after work.

What model Jag was it, LTCAP?
My wife has a XK8, and we had to take it in a few years ago because the radiator cooling fan would run for 20-25 minutes after the car was shut off. There was also a terrific amount of heat eminating from the sides of the car, just behind the front wheels.
The car was not overheating though -- the temperature gauge was steady at 50%. (Hot to me, but she said it was like that since day 1).
Anyways, we took it to my mechanic, who worked on my older 911, and he said nothing was wrong. Note: this mechanic is no longer my 911 mechanic after this day...
We then took it to a Jag specialist, and he knew right away what was wrong. Apparently there was a defect with the water pump impeller, and all of the fins broke off of it.
Ford used a cheapo part that commonly broke.
Just thought I'd share -- it has no relevance other than being a Jag with a weird problem. :)

the one i had was an 88 xjs. i don't like it. i can't fit in it, yet i can easily fit in my geo prism.
funny you mention ford usin cheap parts.
remember the 3.8L head gasket problem? the one when the mechanic tells ya if you've got more then 80k miles and the gasket's not been done yet, then it will be very soon?
same thing. ford went looking for a cheaper supplier(from what i've been told). they found one. and they got what they paid for.

How were the shocks on the XJS? My old man had Jags in the early ninties - an XJ6 then and XJS. Fun cars - especially for a teenager with a recently minted driving license - but they both ate shock absorbers.
The XJS was designed during the Britsh Leyland era of the 70's that destroyed British car building. Its a miracle the bloody things ever ran at all.

Either you cut yourself up pretty bad or the radiator fluid is leaking (joking, joking).

i didn't notice them to be honest.
i've got an xj8 sitting out there waiting for a new caliper and rotor in the rear. they're inboard brakes on that one......calls for 5.5 hours to do them. :furious engineers.........

HEY!!!!!

I never work on any car or bike without leaving hunks of knuckles everywhere. On the Jag subject, I had a 98 XJ8 4.0, with the same water pump impeller problems, and the Nikasil liners, and the original timing chains.
Loved the Jag, but have to wonder at guys that design water pumps with impellers made of a plastic affected by anti-freeze, cylinder liners damaged by petrol, and cam chain tensioners affected by oil???? :huh
All this on a car originally costing £65000
