Title: Hard drive question.
Post by: jamdive on December 26, 2010, 06:21:37 PM
Why would widows xp only recognize 130gig of a 250 gig hard drive. Its new and out of the box. It has not yet been partitioned.

that used to be about the limit under windows, I remember using a ?maxtor driver to access all of a 160GB drive way back, although I think that was a Win2000 install. I deleted it from our backup archive last week by coincedence. if you used an old copy of XP have you got an XP SP2 install disk you can try? or do all the XP updates then use a utility to expand the partition to fill the disk maybe?

if you want to stay with XP this is what I used and deleted last week - Maxtor Big Drive Enabler (works with all drives iirc)

You need Service Pack 1 for XP.  This is a free download from Microsoft (actually the newest is SP3).  Another option would be to partition the hard drive into two virtual drives (each 125GB for example).  Some people running pirated versions of Windows don't want to install a service pack because it also installs the checks to make sure it is a legal copy of Windows.  I hope this isn't the case for you as a simple service pack install would fix your issue.
