Title: Need help myself on something...
Post by: bloom25 on May 02, 2001, 05:29:00 PM
I'm about to install Win 2k in a dual boot configuration on my Athlon system.  I'd like to know what order you guys recommend installing in.

Here's my thought:

Create FAT 32 partition with Partition magic.  Copy Win2k disk to hard drive in this partition.  Install Win 2k, install via 4.29 drivers, install service pack 1, install Athlon processor AGP patch, install DX 8a, install win2k certified Asus v7700 drivers, install all other drivers ending with SB live! value.

I'm also planning on staying with FAt 32 rather than going with NTFS.  This will let me share files between both OSs.

bloom25, as I understand it, you could install 98 on one partition, then install 2K on the other, and 2K will setup a dual boot manager for you.
But you have to install 98 first.

Getting ready to setup a similar system, but with 2 drives.

Were you using UDMA100 disks (HPT370?)?
-If so you need to download its driver in a floppy because when installing W2k you need it then.
When I installed my W2K I did it from CD w/out any problems.

btw W2K installs itself nicely in any place you have free space; Once I got both 98 and W2k in C-drive in their own folders (..thought it was kinda messy setup  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)).
W2K creates an start-up menu where you can select which OS you'd like to use.

Usually programs will work if you install them in both OS in same folder with exatly same setup.
Some small proggies which don't do any register changes works if you install them in one OS and make shortcuts in other OS.

Ok, here's what I did, and it worked beautifully!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I used Partition Magic 6 to reduce the size of my primary partition from 45 gigs to 23 gigs.  I then created another partition (D (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) with the remaining 22 gigs.  I installed win2k using fat32 file system in that partition.  Since it used FAT32 I downloaded drivers for my videocard, SB Live, Service pack 1, Athlon AGP patch, via 4 in 1 4.29s, DX 8a, etc.  (My MB does have an onboard Promise ATA 100 controller, but I don't use it, regardless I downloaded that driver too.  I haven't installed it yet though...)

Win2k boots about 2x as fast as 98 and doesn't yet seem much slower.  I might try playing AH in 2k soon, but much to do before that.

Hmm, I see one thing I don't like.  All my devices are sharing IRQ 9.  You guys happen to know a way to get them to have their own IRQs?

Win2k boots twice as fast as W98??

Tell me the trick how, because my box takes 3x time to boot into W2k instead of 98!

Yeah - it takes longer to boot W2K on mine too.

I split my 45G into 4 partitions. When W2K installer asked for space I pointed to an empty one. It formatted it in NTFS and installed happily there.

I intend to transfer everything on W2K (I like the interface better) but since AH-W2K-X36 USB don't mix I'll keep 98SE for AH only...

Bloom25:  toejamcan your Win2k install.  Then disable ACPI in your BIOS.  Then re-install Win2k.

I know, it sucks.  It's the only way to get your devices all off of IRQ 9.

As for what boots faster, it depends on how much watermelon you have loaded on them in my experience.  My Win98SE system at home is pretty clean, and boots very quickly.  We're talking 15 seconds to the login prompt.  Win2k takes much longer for me, more like 30 seconds.  You can get Win2k to boot much faster by disabling non-essential services so they don't start whenever you boot.

This conversation got way over my head right after the FAT 32 partition.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hmm, ok, my next question is what is the fastest way to kill off Win 2k so I can reinstall it?

Format partition? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) That's what I did  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I think just blasting the Windows directory would work... but it's not gonna work while running 2k.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Since it's a FAT23 partition, you should be able to delete the WinNT directory while running 98, and then re-run Win2k setup.

Delete the partition would be the easiest way, and let 2k setup recreate it and format it NTFS. (FAT sucks).  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)  You can do all your sharing on the Fat32 drive that 98 lives on.

I might eventually change it to NTFS, but for now it's staying FAT32.  It's really nice to be able to just copy and paste sound files, configurations, etc between OSs.  (What was really nice is I have RW Mark 1c without GATOR.  All I had to do is copy and paste the install file into my Win 2k partition.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) )
