On almost all maps, at least on my front end, there is 'brown land' where water used to be. for example (not sure the map, but the high 5.0K base with in the middle of the terrain with a lake to the West (some have called it squid lake?), looks completely filled in and is FLAT brown instead of water blue. The catch is, it still acts like water... if you ditch in it you sink a little.
Other areas of the maps show blue water; however, its not accurate to where the 'water' actually starts.
I have tested this out in different areas of the maps... This happened to me today. Driving an M3 to town, I was traveling on Green ground, then as I got closer to the coast, I got into the brown ground... then I could see the water off in the distance; however, maybe halfway from when it turned brown to where the visible blue water started, I fell into the ground as if I were falling off a ledge into the water... (even though there was no color change on the map), and relative to the game I was sitting in the water, even though it still looks like land.
I have spoken to other people in game and they have reported this as well.
Any thoughts? Something wrong with my maps? Do I need to re-download them?

On the clipboard click Options, Graphic Detail, Advanced, Detailed Water.
It's not a big performance hit. At least not on my old dog of a computer.
I think that'll help you out.

Here are some screenshots showing what I'm seeing--- for example at a port... shouldn't the boats be in the water and not beached?

Will give the detailed water a try, thanks!

Yup. Looks like your detailed water option is off.
Turn on the detailed water and all should be right in the virtual world.

Regardless of the "detailed water" settings, this still sounds like a bug. Choosing less detail shouldn't correlate with no water at all. I believe that I have seen this myself.

It's not a bug. It's just the way it is. I have a low end computer and fly with only the minimal graphics (bump terrain only enabled). If you turn the water details off you don't get to see where the actual edge of the water would be if you had the details on. There's water with details turned off, you just don't see it completely because, well, you turned it off and if you're going to be driving vehicles on the beach, you need to turn it on or else.

I would say its a design flaw in the game if a player sees the coastline in a different place depending on the graphics he can run. If the detailed water area could be made permanent feature (i.e just a plain blue area) but with the detail itself being optional it might not hurt low end framerates too much and stop GVs getting stuck in invisible water.

The detailed water fixed my issue; however, I agree with Greebo, terrain location and visibility should be the same for all pilots regardless of how purty it looks.

driving into USranger's rivers in his AvA desert terrain was a nightmare with low graphics. agreed here

Agreed! It's a real pain, considering my PC likes to disable 'advanced water' every time I enter a combat area or take a small FPS hit.

added a wishlist thread for this to be fixed if possible today. <S>
