Title: dot e6b
Post by: SHawk on December 29, 2010, 04:42:54 PM
A .e6b command would be really nice so a guy could map it to his stick instead of having to reach for the mouse.
Especially when you trying to get a wounded ride home and really don't have a free hand. :aok

Really don't need the others, considering you'd be in the tower mostly for those anyways...

Escape button tends to help with that.

I use one button now.  The one I have mapped ESC to.  Once the E6B is open on the clipboard there is no need to open it again.  Just bring the clipboard up and down.

Granted, you still have to use your mouse, once.

This is neither a + nor a -, just showing you can essentially do now what you are asking for.

I would also like to add:

.clipboardmap

And if they ever do that, the ability to kill the clipboard map fly-out that lets you change maps and add new maps. No reason whatsoever that that is a static feature when the clipboard map is in use for tactical reasons...

And seeing as its still kind of the holidays...kill the E6B as a fly out and put it where the normal map is.... The fly-out is just a screen hog at times

Escape button tends to help with that.
Then you're still having to hit the keyboard, the avoidance of which was the OP's wish

Then you're still having to hit the keyboard, the avoidance of which was the OP's wish

Hitting one key versus typing "dot" E 6 B.

Map the ESC key to a button on your stick.  Yes, you still have to move your mouse and click once.  Once.

Sorry if one key stroke and one mouse click isn't simple enough already.

Question:  can you assign dot commands to a single controller button?

Not in AH, but if your controller has it's own programmable software being able to use scripts, you can do it there. I had ".ef" programmed to my Saitek.

I've seen this request many times now,but if you open E6B on the clipboard map, then close clipboard with E6B still open then the next time you open clipboard E6B will be showing. Now this might not be the intent of the OP,as I suspect he wants to see "just" the E6B displayed.

Now if we could have E6B tied to the radio buffer, text buffer or displayed like the framerate with a shift/I as in Alt/I then I could see a reason to request that.

It seems to me that a simple esc keystroke to bring up E6B would be simpler than typing a dot command, and thats already possible.........

I havent used them really, but Ive been thinking voice command software would come in real handy if more things were given keyboard commands. Like e6b, or "turn cv zero five zero..."

I think of the E6B as a book or a table that you need to physically look at.  Not a Heads-up display projected in front of you.

I think its funny everytime this request comes up and they dont figure out that it actually doesnt save any time to either type .e6b then esc or esc then click .e6b.  not sure if they want it as a separate window and if they do, how to close it type .e6boff? or press esc then close it along with the map.  which brings back to the point of it doesnt save you any time.

I have my clipboard set up to a key on my joystick.  I dont use e6b except when i know i am low on fuel and just want to check how many min left.  and that's about 1 out of every 10 flights.

Now guys do a little test, so you guys can let this thread end.

-either press esc or whichever key you have it on your stick.
-using mouse click on e6b.
-repeat step 1 but now type .e6b

how much time did you save and is it worth having?  or you just want it for the sake of having it.

OK, I've heard all the arguments and have concluded that those of you who don't mind reaching over and using your mouse (yes, even just once) are satisfied.
Like I said before, if I'm all banged up trying to get home missing 1/2 a wing ect. and don't have a free hand to take off the stick using the mouse is a pain.
Those of us using a full HOTAS setup with a gazillion buttons we don't use would like to map a .e6b command to a button on our stick.
I probably use e6b about 5% of the time when in a fighter and I surely don't want it on my screen when I don't need it.
I have the ESC key already setup on a stick button to bring up and close the map, now I would like to hit another button for e6b. It's that simple.
Another possibly better alternative would be add it to the AH key mappings or stick mappings so you could map it to any button or key. :airplane:

P.S. Lulu just map Ctrl-D to your stick for Systems Damage info. :aok

My personal favorite is /.ef mapped to my command pad for 1 key end mission. Comes in real handy when those bastages are trying to vulch ya landing or drop a bomb on your wirble.   :O

dot commands for CV headings would be the shizz!! :aok
Also you can take control of a CV with rank, how about being able to take manned guns with rank??
I hate it when some noob is in the 5" or 8" tossing shells into the water cause they don't know how to use land mode or just clueless, and you need it to actually kill a buff thats trying to hit the CV or kill the base or town.

I just map the clipboard minimize/maximize to my joystick, and open the E6B.  When you close and re-open the clipboard, the E6B will still be displayed.  Used to do this for the net graph when I was having connection problems as well.

 Shawk,

Correct me if I'm wrong but you want to be able to open E6B without using the mouse?

It would seem to me that you could accomplish this by opening E6B on climbout and just close/minimize the clipboard so that when your all shot up and dont have a free hand that all you'd need do is open the clipboard and E6B would be displayed.

I have another question if you dont mind,if you dont have a free hand to use the mouse would you have the dot command programed like you have the .ef?

Personally,I like the idea myself but it's sort of redundant as a single keystroke will do this provided you set the clipboard up when you start a new sortie, then again your wish would remove the need to setup the clipboard.

I like the idea personally....

I can see where SHawk is coming from.  I am right handed and have the stick in my right hand.  Taking my hand off the stick when damaged leads to some pretty funny situations  :O

Since I can type very well and the keyboard is in front of me I can simply type the / .e6b command and get it to  come up without having to relinquish control of the aircraft.  Using the mouse with my left hand is about as effective for me as someone trying to herd cats.

My solution to this problem, as mentioned earlier, is to have the e6b up and use the throttle mapped hat for e6b.  I must admit that I frequently pull up lots of things in the "slideout" on the clipboard and getting shot up without the having the e6b leaves me in trouble.

:)

what you guys need is for e6b to be in its own pop up window. but nobody is asking for it.
