On the wishlist for me is a Spitfire L.F. XIV (or F.R. XIVe?) with a bubble canopy, as a perk ride.

Wing Commander Peter Brothers, O/C Culmhead Wing in 1944-1945 and a Battle of Britain veteran:-
It was truly an impressive machine, being able to climb almost vertically - it gave many Luftwaffe pilots the shock of their lives when, having thought they had bounced you from a superior height, they were astonished to find the Mk XIV climbing up to tackle them head-on, throttle wide open!
Love the above quote - vertical climbing HO'ing Spitfires.... sound familiar? haha

A hearty +1

While i don't think spit pilots are gay just as I don't think LA7 pilots are - but I do agree with the last bit - there are a list of Russian, Japanese, and a few italian planes that need adding before we get another spit. . .
-
Hooray for more tater targets!

AFAIK the L.F. XIV was the F.R. XIVe, fitted with guns and two cameras. I don't know so much about the XIV though. I hope he does. I just want it, whatever it is.

You can never have too many spitfires! :)
-
no, no more spits. they suck, lock post please?

The first bubble canopy XIVs showed up about the same time as the first bubble canopy XVIs, meaning roughly mid to late April 45. The XIVs had full span wings from all the photos I've ever come across. Many were clipped post war.
So yes Johnnie Johnson had a low back XIV at the very end of the war :)
I'd preferr the XII though
The late Terry Spencer in his high back XIV that he had while commanding 350 Squadron RAF. He was shot down by flak in this bird and made POW but managed to escape by stealing a motorcycle and racing back across the Remagan Bridge.

Terry's low back XIV that replaced the one he was shot down in. He was in the wing commanded by Johnnie Johnson at the time and would have had this bird about the same time Johnnie had the one painted like the pictures Furball posted.

that second pic makes it not even look like a spit, it looks more like a mustang without the air intake thing on the belly, i think.

You can have it if we get a 190 D13

OK you can have all the D-13s that made it to operations. Deitmar Hermann's book says there were 2 :)
You'll have to discuss it among yourselves as to who gets to fly the two D-13s.

Spitfire MK XII ftw :aok

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got any stats on this bird handy?

What a beautiful aircraft!
http://www.deroeck.co.uk/Spitfires-New/Spitfire-Mk-XIV-MV268-02.html (http://www.deroeck.co.uk/Spitfires-New/Spitfire-Mk-XIV-MV268-02.html)
Spitfire Mk XIV MV268, bearing the Squadron Markings JE-J, and Spitfire Mk XIV ME293 are the same aircraft, with the civilian registration G-SPIT
Built just too late to see active service she went to India for a short time before returning to UK, being struck off service and sold as a civilian aircraft.
The correct Royal Air Force registration for this Spitfire is as MV293 but in 2000 it was painted in the colour scheme and markings of AVM Johnnie Johnson as a tribute to his wartime service. Johnnie Johnson was apparently attending a display at Duxford and did not know of the new colour scheme.
AVM Johnsons record during the nastiness was, 34 destroyed, 7 shared destroyed, 3 shared probables, 10 shared damaged, 1 destroyed on the ground.
I bet the best bit was him seeing "his" areoplane at Duxford 2000.
