I think my vid card or ram is in need of replacement. What card would be good for the system I have (trying to make it last until I can get new one) Getting occasional screen freezes that sometimes require power button to be held in to get puter turned off
My system is a GA 965P ds3 board lga775 with a c2d 6600 running at stock 2.4 and a 7900Gs vid card
Would a GT240 be a good choice? or more than system can support?
Want to stay with nvidia card.
Thanks in advance.

need to know your power supply output in watts.will be on the sticker on the psu.
-
Sorry I shoulda known that - 700w on packing slip, cant see sticker anywhere, its on very bottom of case in back.
-
Any chance you happen to know the +12V output?
-
If you can afford it get the best that you can get. I have been using this. EVGA 480 GTX. Hands down best card I have had to date.
-
Its a fspgroup/fx 700-gln 700w 20+4 R on the invoice, cant find box, and like I said psu is on bottom of case in back - no sticker visible.
I just dont want to buy a card that is more than the cpu can make use of

With out knowing the watts and amps on your PSU you can not buy any card other then whats in there. It would be a crap shoot. You could way under power a video card and it my get you to your desktop but will not run any games... that is if it will even boot.
The GTX 480 mentioned above requires at least 42 amps on the rail for itself, therefore needing at least a 600 watt PSU at minimum.

I'd look for at least a GTS250 (or a 9800GTX+ which is about the same thing). A 240 may be better than a 7900GS, but not by all that much.
Personally, I would save up for at least a 4XX series, or even consider going ATI as the 5770 and any of the 58XX series cards are very nice.
But yes, like TD mentioned, you need to find out what you can about your power supply. If it can't handle the load, you can damage the rest of your system (and fry a brand new video card).. or in a best case scenario it won't work properly if at all.

I've been thinking of getting this card.It is as fast as a 460 and uses less power and is $70 cheaper.

It is no where near as fast. The numbers are fooing. What ATI does not show on there cards is the actual transfer rate. The GTX 460 has a bandwidth of ~128GB/s where as the 6850 is ~98GB/s this is where you get your speed. Where as the GTX 580's are about 200GB/s Clock speed is only a part of the speed of a graphics card.

i was just comparing the card he was showing.

Very true about the numbers,it would be nice if they actually standardized the reported speeds and other information. The way it is now, comparing the two brands is very confusing without extensive research. Thanks for the tip. :salute

So, after I pulled psu out to get the info - none will reply now ?

It speaks for itself.... 18A. Your less then limited with you can can replace with. I for one will not go and look the specs up of each video card. If you were over 36A then you would be in the ball game for something somewhat up to date, but 18A ties you down to your choices. Maybe a 9800 but again check the specs for the cards.
