Seemed every time I engaged with a guy that went under say a few hundred feet his icon toggled off even tho I might be less than 1K behind him. Was seeing this over and over as were my squaddies. Was it part of the setup? Wasn't like it was a down in the trees thing. The icon toggled well above that level. Became very hard to track a target against the ground.

Yes.

To cut down on all the eloquent B.S. in Ernest "Spikes" Hemingway's post.....yes. It is a feature. Not a malfunction. ;)

It's been that way for a while.

:headscratch:
I am lost gents. We don't have any default icon setting for FSO that they disappear at a couple hundred feet. We can do that, but it is not a default setting by any means. I 'think' I have been the only one to make some changes to icon settings. It has been the standard 3k for a while now. Anyone have a short film clip they could send me?

Maybe just a mistake in the setup? Here is the intended setup from this frame:
"- Icon Range – Friendly 3k, Enemy 3k."
@ Daddog, I noticed it too when following a 109 on the deck. If you still need a clip, I am sure I can send you one.

I concur... we noticed the same thing. Under about 500' the icon would go away. While it may not have been the intent of the setup, it was certainly in effect.
-
I had to do a double take when I saw the no Icons...my first thought was the enemy con became a lawn dart.....all and all I like the no icon...especially for an escaping IL2 on the deck.
-
It may have been a setup error. I have certainly had my share of those. :uhoh
Shoot me a film clip gents if you don't mind and I will double check with the Setup CM's.

The icons do disappear.

?
Do as in they did last night Spikes? Or do on a regular basis?

Yes last night for sure. Rhah and I were engaged in LA's in our jets that kept disappearing as they ducked under 500.

Fighting over A5 city on the deck...yes the icons disappeared. But I loved it! Plane shapes were apparent!
If ya need flash cards to tell you that is a Yak , a 109, or an La...ya need pwactice ;)
I find the icons off on the deck spectacular and a nice touch!

That change was what got some of us killed. We all were under the impression that everything within 3K was an icon. I had guys I pinged within 400 to 800 that the icon disappeared. I switched targets only to discover I was being chased down by planes that icons would reappear.
Usually, when the icon disappears within the 3K range, that plane is down. Under that assumption, I would disengage and switch targets taking my awareness off of those planes in which the icons disappeared thinking they are no longer a threat. In doing so,I got keeled...
My lesson here is never assume and follow them into the ground or keep shooting...
But I do believe that based on the objectives, the icon thingee may have been set up incorrectly for frame 1. Not a big deal to me but I will pay more attention when engaged in frame 2.

If they icons were off below a certain alt it was a mistake. My apologies for that gents.
In my setup's I turn of the icons usually at a low alt, but I am the only one that does that. Sorry for the setup error gents.

No problem daddog... Considering everything you and the staff do for FSO and the guys / gals that participate in it, this is a minor thing. Quite frankly, I don' tknow how y'all keep track of so many things. Hats off to ya and the CMs!!!
