Title: More naval traffic on waters
Post by: Helm on January 08, 2011, 02:51:29 PM
It would be nice if we could have more Naval/merchant traffic on the waters of ACES high.  We have thousands of miles of water in Aces and the only Naval traffic is the one tug boat w/ the barges in tow.  It would be nice if the waters had fishing trawlers and some type of merchant traffic.  It would be cool if they flew a flag of the country they belong to, similar to the flags now flown at the towns.  Some could even have AAA guns like the train does.  Maybe some sanpans?  It just a suggestion.

I would have to agree. Some kind of change in the CV groups might be nice as well. I would like to see each country have one "Heavy CV" group that has a double cruiser. Or if we could get a battleship added, then each country could have a task group with a battleship and an escort carrier.

For the special events we could really use the addition of tanker and transport ships. Give the CM the ability to select the number of tankers or transport ships that are required and use them in place of the CV in a task group.

I think they would die to quickly. Maybe indestructable? with 1 or 2 guns.

+1   maybe a pocket battleship...i think a normal battleship would be too big for the game. i do like the idea of a supply convoy or oil tanker :x :x

Also, I would like it if they would allow the cruiser and destroyers to detach and do some Arleigh Burke raids. Or not, but I do like the idea of having a transport convoy with destroyer and cruiser escort. I know, getting complicated and detracts from the pure fighter mission but...

could have merchant fleets, 6-7 merchant ships being escorted by destroyers. only problem is where are they coming from? and where would they be going too?

I would love to scout out for lone merchants and freighter convoy's to hit.  I would probably be in the Mossy 6 quite a bit for this task, if not a Val or SBD. :x

Liberty ships, coastal shipping, merchant convoys farther out in open waters.

Should be a variety of shipping, most if it undefended or lightly defended.

I think the idea of having more traffic in that wide open space called the ocean is worthy of attention.  Perhaps a convoy of 2-3 ships, maybe a pair of lightly armed cargo ships and a corvette escort?  Something just to give a random target to attack but yet enough of a defense to not loiter around and drink and extra cup of tea.

What if these merchant fleets acted like our current battle groups as in being able to steer them on a course but act like tenders, where if the cv is damged you could bring in a tender and it would fix the cv to an extent, of course you want to keep them out in the deep blue and out of the fight.

that could work, except then you'd have the same problem that we have between "spies" and the cv group, cept with the merchant fleet, spy could just take control of merchant fleet, sail it close to an enemy base, then that "spies" squad just bombs the crap out of it for easy perks/score.

personally i think it should run like the barge, be un a preset route set by HTC, from port to port, but also have a symbol on the map to tell friendlies where its located like a cv group.

I think eventually players will be able to pilot ships as well as aircraft and gvs and we will have a all out war game. Should be cool i cant wait.

They would be much need targets for the special events as well. Great for the immersion factor IMO  :joystick:

Something like this rather graphic footage.

The Kiwis of 486 Squadron seem to have it well dialled-in.

While it would be cool, the coading would suck.

If it was setup like the trains on a static path always traveling the same route you could set it up like the train, only on water. On the other hand if you make then free roaming/controlable like the CV groups you run into issues. There is a limit to the number of CV groups you can have due to the data involved with the constant up dating of position for the group. Another sea going group would have to fall into those restrictions. Add a merchant fleet, loose a CV group.  :(

I envisioned it to be set up much like the trains.(Which I want back too.)

Think about it like this: After a long escort mission, the fighters are cut loose on the countryside to wreak havoc on train yards and merchant shipping. I personally get bored after a couple hours in the air and know that the action is over, yet I've still got a few sectors to fly to get home. Please give me a target.

What I was thinking was that every base within a set distance of shore would have X amount of merchant ships and or destroyer pickets attached to it.

They would run a preset course and have no bearing on whether said base could be captured. All they would be there for would be to shoot at us and for us to shoot at them. Perkies would be awarded based on the value that a destroyer holds at the time.

RTBing and running NOE low on the water would be a different animal.
