Title: Snow In Arkansas--World Coming to an End--Moron Festival
Post by: ROX on January 09, 2011, 05:18:56 PM
Unbelievable.

We've got like 3 1/2" of snow so far and the world is shutting down/coming to an end.

People are driving at 2 and 3 mph.  Semi's stuck on by-pass on ramps.  Complete morons with no clue how to drive in good weather are careening into each other because they didn't have the common sense just to stay home.  So far 26 accidents on just 9 miles of 4 lane highway in just 2 hours.  My wife is so busy at the OR at the big hospital in town she's staying all night.

What ever happened to common sense?

Ok--I'll be the first to say it..."Hold my beer and watch this".

Arkansas = Common Sense    :headscratch:

 :bolt:

I tried to find the picture of a few years ago here in Virginia beach where there was was an ice storm which caused several large pile ups mostly around the interchange area, it pretty much shut this area down from the people that continued to just fly down the road at highway speeds then just drift off into the shoulder or barricades...  :lol

kilo---it's specifically a South and Central snow event....some sleet and ice down near Shreveport.  Central is expected 3-6" and we have almost 4" already.

If you live up northwest you will get flurries to 1" tomorrow night.

Northeast goes unscathed.

LOL I am currently down in SC and you wanna see a mad dash to the grocery store for bread, milk and eggs. People are funny down here and I gotta laugh, but OMG its gonna dump 3 inches on the ground. From where I grew up 3 inches would be considered a dusting.

People freaked out here and we are only getting an inch.

Well it started dropping sleet here in Birmingham, AL around 3:30 this afternoon and now we are getting snow and rain mixed together. Temperature here today hasn't been above freezing all day long and its supposed to drop between 3-6 inches of snow here around Birmingham with at least 2 inches of ice under all that. We will be lucky to have electricity in the morning.

Now it's 4 1/2" and still falling here on Music Mountain.

Most of the city is shut down and only traffic on street roads is happening.

We normally have ICE STORMS instead and I'll take a snow storm (yes, anything more than 1" is considered a "storm" here.  I grew up in Waukegan, IL and went to college in Minnesota.  We learned how to drive sophmore year in high school driver ed in the winter and did winter interstate driving practice.  Here, there IS no mandatory driver's ed and the roads are literally a demolition derby.  Sad.

This is by far the most snow I have ever seen in the South...I've lived here 10 years and never more than a couple of inches at a time and that is a rarity.  They do get more in NW AR where it is far more mountainous than here...that's also the only place that has plows to handle it.

I just woke up about 45 minutes ago and what do I see.  What appears to be 2 inches or more of snow on the ground.  I hit the wally world last night and it looked like there was a sale on bread.  People start to freak out here at the slightest hint of winter weather.  Unfortunately it will be a frozen mess in a day or two.  To all the people affected by this stay warm and safe.

We are getting snow for the first time this winter, too.

This is a place that in some areas is semi-tropical.  We normally don't get snow.  Big snows are a once a decade deal.

Hint:  The eatery a half mile away on Bull Bayou serve gator.  I have cactus in my yard.

it really doesn't take much snow to diddly things up, when nobody is running winter tires and the plowing/sanding equipment isn't running.  even in canada a early snow storm causes havoc.

Don't get me started on the snowtards.  Two sunday's ago I left the family cabin in a 4x4 with chains (in the back, never used them this year thankfuly) up in No. Cal with over 6" packed on the driveway and 2-4" of fresh stuff on most the highways out of the mountains up there (this was early on the day after New Years and the CA DOT isn't famous for its weekend and holiday snow removals, so I wasn't expecting a fully plowed route, but was pleased to make good cruising speed on the stretches that were plowed and not needing to chain up on the stretches that weren't.).  Then I get to the grapevine on I-5 and the fu!@in' CHP(IA) shut the whole thing down an hour before sunset because snow is starting to stick and they don't want to even try to fight it with plows through the night and escort the numpties through it.  The numpty factor and the incapabilities of the average So. Cal driver in bad weather I understand.  But turning around a prepared and capable driver though (in a 4x4 with chains none-less) at the first sign of snow on the road (it was at less than an inch when they turned me around at the closure) made me want to jsut shove my way through the roadblock after driving for 9 hours and just over an hour away from home (which ended up with me taking an aditional 5-6 hour detour and only racking up 3 hours of sleep before work the next morning, but hey, can you still tell I was errked by the whole fiasco over a week ago?).

The logic being that if the CHP only let the capable and prepared drivers through (4x4, snow tires, chains, a warm jacket, spare jug of water, etc.), the average incapable and unprepared So. Cal driver (front-wheele drive, drop kitted beamer with worn tire tread, t-shirt, shorts, sandals, and a venti capachino from the last Starbucks they passed, etc.) would insist on being allowed to pass through too and would sooner spend the duration of the storm arguing with the officer before having the common logic dawn upon them.

Well just north of Birmingham in a town called Cullman, AL they are claiming up to 8 inches of snow with about an inch of ice underneath it all.

My kids were out of school all day today here in Birmingham and it was mainly ice. I had a little under an inch....around 7/8 inch of ice on the street here at my house. Temp only got to 33 today which was just warm enough for the ice on the power lines to melt...good thing for us. Since we are supposed to be getting freezing rain again tonight and the temps are going back into the upper 20's again tonight.

Here in NH I laugh as I see guys who think they're invincible in their 4 wheel drives go whizzing by!!

No common sense is what usually clogs up the roads.

Hey I'm Springdale High class of 1983!

You should see when we get snow in Texas. It's even worse!

Like this?? This shut down my area for several days.. Several gas station ran out of gas b/c the trucks couldn't get in.. At the end of the day on Christmas Eve we had about 14'' of snow with drifts up to 6'.  My back yard was between 19'' - 30''. Most snow I've ever seen.

Near white out conditions.. It was much worse later (couldn't even make out the shape of the houses across the road but) I was at work so no pictures  :(
(http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss304/longhornsfan2010/100_4707.jpg)

A little bit later after the first one... can start to see the drift in the front yard.

Date is wrong on this one, this was Christmas Day. You can see the lines from the insane wind while it was snowing.

Christmas Day also... The huge drift in my back yard.. This is where the snow was almost 30'' deep

Back yard again from the side.

Up here in the Great White North, the first snow fall causes all kinds of havoc until the brain kicks into winter driving mode. Unfortunately for some this never happens especially those who have 4 wheel drive vehicles. Helps with the 'go' but doesn't help with the 'whoa'.

Saw a funny today. Pulled up behind a pick-up truck with a plow on it. The truck had summer tires. :x

all the snows gone here but it was quite frosty a coupla days ago, so there was some black ice around. police attended 30 pileups in the county in the space of 2 hours. people just driving around at 80 like usual ...

got to feel sorry for this guy though, his property is on a bend and this truck was the seventh vehicle to smash into his wall that morning!

you'd think after seeing, say the first 4 or 5 cars smashed up by the roadside, that people would get the hint and slow down. apparently not though

That's why I parked my 4 wheel drive up on a hill . No one can get up there to hit it . I need to get out of here and go pull some car's out of the ditches and make me some money . I have a new set of co-op's on it , well every thing is new on it.

And powder it was. That was the crappy snow.. could barely make a snowball out of it..

I Feburary we got about 6'' of some of the stickiest snow i'd ever seen.. had a 1/4'' rope hanging across my yard and the snow piled up on top of it even.

In my area there were thankfully only 2 traffic deaths from the storm--and that's 2 too many.

There are two major factors:

A)  There is no mandatory Driver's Ed in this state

B)  Most people feel just because they have a big 4WD or large pick-up that they can drive the same way in icy/snow as they do in warm weather

Luckily, it was simply a snow event.  Normally we get ice storms 1"++ and the last one knocked out power at my house for 10 days and some people in Arkansas did not have power restored for almost 2 months.

Was in one once driving my old 75 Caddy.

"Crusing" along at about 40 mph, the car slowly came to a stop without my letting off the gas and then slowly slid directly sideways off the crown of the road.

Fun times------in the middle of nowhere--no phone, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury, like Robinson Caruso, it was primitive as could be.

i would like to see a sort of bad weather driving course. around here, it seems that it there is even a hint of rain, the driving schools all cancel their lessons.

i was lucky....my grandpop taught me a LOT in some nasty bad snows back in 1979. he taught me in his 67 mustang, and made me take the 71 ford station wagon out in it too. you want a hard time in snow? drive an old mustang or an old ford station wagon in it. then of course, 'cause i was a cocky invincible kid, i took both of those cars to empty parking lots for some "car skating". thanks to all of that, i can, and have driven easily in the worst that mother nature has thrown at nj.
in 1994 i was driving a tow truck in that blizzard, till the boss called and told me to stop taking calls and park it. i drove my 89 gt in the storms in 96 and 97. it's not hard. you just need to think ahead is all. something that kids today don't seem to be being taught when they learn to drive.
