Goodbye to a true american hero.
-
:(
Winters was always gracious about his new-found celebrity, but never really comfortable with it. He never claimed to be a hero and said that he had nothing to do with the national effort to get him the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor.
When people asked him if he was a hero, he liked to answer the way his World War II buddy, Mike Ranney, did.
“No,” Ranney said. “But I served in a company of heroes.” That became the tag line for the miniseries.
In an interview shortly before the miniseries debuted, Winters said the war wasn’t about individual heroics. The men were able to do what they did because they became closer than brothers when faced with overwhelming hardships.
They weren’t out to save the world. They hated the blood, carnage, exhaustion and filth of war. But they were horrified at the thought of letting down their buddies.
Truly a sad loss. :salute

He was a real hero. I just bought the series last month and watched it over winter break just by watching an actor play his part i feel like you could tell how great a person he was. :salute

Those who want to talk about themselves generally don't deserve the attention; those who want the attention to go to others - like Winters - oft are much more worthy

Should be in C-47's with D-Day stripes, being he was Airborne. Mass missing man formation of C-47's, all dropping troops.

Gotta see if I can say this right. I don't think Richard Winters would have minded. Those that really knew him and cared about him know of his passing. He didn't like the celebrity and all those that tried to take a piece of him based on a TV series.
I think it safe to say that it bothered him that so many folks missed the point. He didn't do what he did for medals, glory or fame. I would guess he's been warmly welcomed by those who went before him going back to those kids who didn't get to live the full life he did.
The best way to honor him is to teach the history to your kids. I don't mean E/506 but all those guys and gals who have sacrificed over the years for the sake of the rest of us.

<S> to Guppy, he certainly knows how to speak.
:salute again to Winters
:salute for all that fought in WWII, be it those who fought hard and long in the factories, those who fought repairing and maintaining tools of war,
or those who combated the enemy directly, on all sides.

I'm sure Major Winters didn't mind that there was no mention of his passing. Watching all of the interviews, and reading everything I could find written about him or by him, it seems that he still struggled with reconciling that it was through his story being told that the others were remembered.
It is not that Major Winters did not mind, that should not be an issue, but rather that the media was too busy following the stupidity they so dearly love, because every mention of men like Major Winters inspires a few to remember the sacrifices of those now forgotten. We would be far better served if they inspired people to remember rather than convinced them to turn off their minds.
-
For what it's worth, the story is now making the rounds. It was front page in my local paper. Apparently Winters asked that news of his death be withheld until after his funeral which was on the 8th.
It seems the media respected his wishes.

Just found that note as well.
He felt he was just a normal man who did what he had to do at the time.
I don't think anyone would deny he was anything less than a true hero.
<S>
Ouch out.

Quite possibly. Perhaps to make it easier to have the private funeral.

Maj. Winters is not gone. He has just been recalled to duty with his unit. May his reunion be joyful as he rejoins those that went before and as he awaits the rest yet to be called.

I am embarrassed for modern media. Their freedom is secured by guys like Maj. Winters. I say this without exaggeration: all of our lives would have been very different were it not for Maj. Winters and his brothers-in-arms.

It is common in personal histories for survivors of war to wonder why they got a long life and some of their comrades did not. One of the interview sequences in the “Band of Brothers,” one of the real life heroes says something like “I’m not a hero. He heroes are buried over there.” (Pardon the paraphrase.)
My late father was a sailor on the USS Hornet (CV-12), and he met a veteran from the USS Franklin (CV-13) sometime in the 1990's. My dad held this guy in high regards as a hero. The other man deferred to those who didn't make it.

Turns out "modern media" was just following Major Winter's wishes.
Modest as ever, Winters asked that news of his death be kept private until after his funeral.
He passed January 2, 2011.

he should have been awarded with the CHM in 1946 for the artillery nest take on D-Day as well as capturing the map with all the current enemy positions on it.
He would never allow his name to be associated with the word "hero" (as does my father-in-law, D-Day, plus pulled woulded guys off the line as a medic during the Huertigen Forest campaign--X3 Bronze Stars) yet they both truly were.
